As I am discussing with some of the folks on private email aspects of this dagger and some were asking to post it for a wider debate so here it is. Nothing to hide. Any questions/ opinions please shout.

My questions are if anyone has seen other examples like this; Is it a late version with the crudeness of the pommel rings and ferrule? If so, is it proper to see a throatless scabbard on a late version? Also, and foremost is the the taper tang. How did a taper tang blade get on this 'late' version? Has anyone seen a taper tang 2nd Model RR, and with stamped letters ?

It looks like a parts piece to me. The crudeness of the fittings could be from pitting to the metal, but the condition of the grip and blade don't match the condition of the rest of the dagger. Also, photos are not the best. I would be shocked to see any type of reproduction incorporate the formed scabbard throat on an aluminum based scabbard with the over plating. JMO.

I agree Ron. That blade was not fitted at factory to that hilt.
Overlord, Please show a photo of the grip tang opening- both sides. Thanks.

That confirms it for me, I'm with Ron on this being a 'parts dagger'. Others may have a different opinion, that is just mine. -sorry.

Can you explain your logic - I get the blade/ scbbard quality discrepency but what does it have to do with a grip?

Anyone other opinions? A parts dagger of this rarity is unlikely IMP. Late tapered tang but look at the trademark. This is a mid period blade. Possible a real combination.

This dagger looks to me very controversial. Up to now I have not seen any comparable. Very very hard to judge simply from pics - perhaps even impossible to judge. The dagger generally does look like an early EICKHORN RRPP dagger with the prominent built in scabbard throat and wearing traces, also the finish generally does look like the proper (tarnished) silvering over leightweight (aluminium) parts, also aluminium scabbard. BUT there are a lot of features I absolutely do NOT like and let me even think of a total fake. Please understand, these certain details are minute and delicate therefore I dont want to mention it as the fakers obviously do learn. I do own such a proper early EICKHORN RRPP dagger therefore I am in the situation to compare 1:1. And all the doubtless originals (of this certain model RRPP dagger) I have seen up to now do fit 100% to my exemplare.

"A parts dagger of this rarity is unlikely IMP"
I think the reverse is true. Faking a very rare dagger is made a lot easier because few people know what to look for or have even seen one.
The normal explanation the fakers use is "so few of these were made that the factory did not have all the parts on hand so they had to modify some."
