recently bought this police buckle noticed it was black in the data base it says (Fire Protection Police Enlisted Buckle Adopted 1938). I have not see but two of these . could someone please tell me more about it who wore it? was it fire and police?

These police blackened buckles were worn by Fire Department NCOs. Bright buckles were worn by the regular police. Blackened buckles could be worn both by either Feuerwehr and Feuerschutzpolizei. Black police officer buckles show the same distinction.

thank you I was curious about why it was black. how common are they? I almost wrote it off as a police buckle with the silver wash/paint chipping off till I looked at the back.

They are actually less often seen than the standard bright finished Police NCO buckle. The blackened Officer buckle is seldom encountered.
On this example notice that the catch is also blackened.

I need to talk to my friend I got it from because he said this one was on a belt and he took it off and put the better buckle on the bet just thinking the same thing I was that the silver was flecking off.

talked to my friend said the catch looked like brass with heavy patina good thing now I don't have to convince him to sell me the belt
