Guys
Does anyone know if very very rare flintlock Duelling pistols have gone up in value over the last 4-5 years?
I have a set and need to decide what to do with them. Are they good investment pieces to hold on to. Or is it a good time to sell as sterling is so low?. They are lovely things but not my cup of tea!
Also where would you sell them to get the best money for them?.

He used to be with Butterfield and Butterfield, and I haven't dealt with or spoken to him for years, but if I had something like that I would probably contact Greg (at Greg Martin Auctions). And if its not something that he might want to handle himself, Im sure that he could give you a UK based individual or firm to contact. Best Regards, FP Greg Martin Auctions

Ask Butler at Wallis & Wallis. Garth Vincent (specialist)01400 281358. Blunderbuss Antiques www.blunderbuss-antiques.co.ukOR consign to Hermann Historica,Munich. (Think you are being optomistic pricewise) Cheers Seiler

They were bought for 21600 ($40,500) in a Christies auction some years ago.
So assuming someone still wants to pay $40,000 usd for them they should be worth around 28,000 today in GDP??. If like daggers the value is basically set in Dollars?.
I really dont know anything about old Guns but do know from the old auction description that they are super rare and important pieces. Fingers crossed that with the passing of a bit of time this kind of stuff goes up in value as well?.

I watched a set of matched pistols go at Greg Martin for better than 100K USD. My observation about Greg Martin is that there is no recession in the bidding room.
On the other hand, prices are down, so it makes sence to hold. Especially with the looming inflation coming.
Just my 2 cents
Jim

Butler at Wallis&Wallis is a bit of an old fart Antiques Road Show BBC 1..and I,ve had convulsions at some of his estimates but they DO sell some amazing sets at very high prices. Prepare your own "newbie" description and give them a call.Wont hurt Are they boxed? Maker named?where, special mounted fittings? damascus barrels???approx date? Good hunting. PS have a look at Hermanns last Auction. Some super rare/expspensive pieces sold. Cheers Seiler

These are the exact pistols from when they were bought at Christies a few years back. Im afraid they do nothing for me but if you are into stuff like this im sure they are good. http://www.christies.com/LotFi...?intObjectID=4711747

Certainly rare but with all the condition issues and replaced parts I struggle to see why they commanded double the top estimate.Don't think they will show much profit if any after commission is deducted but then the auctioers and dealers I suggested would give you an idea of current market value. At the end of the day they are worth what they get on the day(subject to reserve)and if two people are desperate for them who knows. That obviously happened the last time they sold but if they don't make reserve you got a big bill for nothing.Best of luck the best bet may be West Street Antiques on commission that way if they don't sell it costs you nothing. Have a look at www.antiquearmsandarmour.com for details

The Royal Armouries in Leeds might be a possible buyer or even Boss the London gun makers who are still in business making very expensive shotguns

Thanks AJ, like I said I cant really comment on price as to why they are worth what as they are not my sort of things. But condition aside it seems to be that there are only three sets known to exist, so I guess they will comand a good price and were the first guns to be made by Boss. I will put them into auction and just see what happens I guess.
