Hello
Was wondering what the best browser would be, Firefox or IE7.
I have been using IE forever and have gotten use to it. Looked at Firefox and if I change, it looks like I will have to get use to some different tabs and usage.
Thanks, Ron

Ron,

I use Firefox and have for some time because of easiness to set it up to your own tastes re cookies, downloads, privacy, etc.

Firefox. Easy to configure and quick to get comfortable with. Very flexible with nice security features. Has a ton of addons for additional features and custom toolbars. Open source and free to use.

Hello
Switched to firefox and everytime I log out then return to GDC, I have to login with my password again.
Thishappens even though I have checked the remember me password on IE9 and Firefox. Is there something else I need to check to get it to remember me so I don't have to log in each tiem? Thanks, Ron

The first time you log on with a new browser you have to do that with all password protected sites. After that it should be automatic if settings are right. To check: At the top left of the screen:

Tools ... then Options ... then Security

There is a box "Remember Passwords for Sites" that should be checked. Close box.

Then when you log on and put in a password you will get a pop-up box asking if the password should be saved or remembered.

Computer help again. I know Vern has told me a few times how to fix it, but can't seem to find how to now. GDC is the only forum it is happeing on. My problem. Everytime I log in on the forum and then happen to go to anotehr forum (never log out of GDC) but when I return to GDC page, it says I am not logged in. WHen I first log in, I check the remember me box, but it still makes me log in again. what do I need to check on the Windows VIsta, IE7. Ron

In IE7, make sure "cookies" are enabled. That's how your browser remembers that you are already logged in wink

Hello Vern
I think I did that by going to tools and going to internet properties and making a check on it. Is there soem other place I have to check save cookies? Did I not do it correctly?

Check your settings for JAVA and JAVAScript. Disabling those usually also turn off "cookies".

I use Firefox myself. In addition to having a mind of its own, IE has lots of security concerns wink

This site flatly refuses to store your cookies. Had the same trouble on going for over a year. If you clear your cache and try to log back in, it takes 7-10 attempts before it finally stores. Brand spanking new installation of IE11 and had the same problems on IE10.
It may well be the browser that does not like the forum software, but this is the ONLY site I ever have trouble with.
The only way I could get it to store this time was by clicking on Verns name in the "people online" window, which takes you to a different login screen.
Out of interest Vern, why would Java be a requirement for logging in?.

Sorry if this explanation rambles a bit but I just had shoulder surgery this morning and am on the "good" stuff wink

Clearing the cache should not effect cookies in any way. My browser cache is cleared automatically every week as part of my backup process and I've never had a problem. Some browsers do default to clearing both the page cache and cookies, but you should be able to control that through the "Tools" menu on your browser. After clearing cookies, it may take a couple of tries to log in as the site remembers you, requests your cookie so it can log you in, and times out if your browser doesn't reply or sends a null value. I'll take a look at the code and see if there is anything we can do to make it work better.

Java is used to provide extended functionality for HTML on the site. I have been converting routines to php because it is faster and more flexible but am not sure how much Java is still around. I'll check and see if we can do away with the Java requirement.
