Breathtaking Gary, such pieces are absolute treasure & what else can one say?

Paul,
I believe "ivory" can also be obtained from hippos, walruses, narwhal horns & some of the teeth of sperm whales. There's also fossilized mammoth ivory which can be used today & doesn't fall into those silly 100 year old CITES restrictions.

Thanks for showing Gary.
One point of caution for those entering the USA: Our customs guys do not necessarily recognize "old ivory" and let it through. I've heard a couple of bad stories about WWI vintage daggers that got hung up.

Paul: I believe the term "core ivory" is used to describe ivory from the center of the tusk. It is also my understanding that this ivory is denser than that found near the surface and is less prone to cracking or warping so it's more desireable. As an aside I handled some ivory pistol grips made from fossilized mammoth ivory and it's just striking looking stuff. Here's an example of "mastodon" ivory grips which are about 15000 years old so you can see what I'm talking about. Jim

It's taken a bit of time but I've added another couple of Ivory Navy's, this is the latest, a very minty Eickhorn with hammered scabbard and original knot.

Gary, I have never seen this many excellent ivory gripped TR navy daggers in my life. Well done...simply breathtaking. I have many ivory gripped Imperial pieces but TR are rarer IMO. Ok, now I am jealous. Have to add one to my hunting list. Thanks for sharing this rare treat. Regards Rick

Jim, The fossilized Mammoth ivory has that characteristic color and polishes well because ground water percolation has allowed minerals, particularly silica leached from the overburden sediments to fill the naturally occurring pores. This makes the ivory denser and easier to work and polish than contemporary ivory. Beautiful grips by the way. Regards, Rick

Nurseswim Would need close-up photos to be sure. The navy hangers are rare Imperial pieces. Take care of them or sell them to me and I'll give you a free set of TR hangers that go with the belt. Cheers and thanks for showing.

I will try to post pictures later this weekend. However, a few key features. The imperial dagger hangers are all fire guilt brass buckles and clips. The clips typically do not swivel. They are fixed. They usually do not have the "bee hive" looking clip style. There are some that do but they a very notably shorter than TR versions. Imperial pieces often have the clip spring external to the clip rather than built in like on TR versions. I'll post versions later if I can crack the code again to sizing photos. There was more uniformity in design in TR period but materials varied from brass early on. Later heavy bunt metal, aluminum and finally cheap pot metal. Administrative hangers post WW1 were silvered. I have never encountered a silvered set of imperial hangers. I'm sure others can add here. Regards
Rick

It is hard to tell in the photo, but the backing of the hangers is royal blue.
Here is a long imperial hanger that came with a short imperial dagger.
Does anyone want to venture a opinion on what is the value of imperial hangers.
