Hi

I am normally only collecting German WW2 bayonets, but got an offer to buy this. So i bought it. Any info on type, model, rarety etc. is vey much appreciated. Also value (Europe) on this bayonet.

I got the bayonet from the grandsons wife of an old veteran of the war. He fought on the west front in France up to the end of the war. It has been in the family since.

Besides the fotos below, a Small number 3 with a figure on top is present at besides the lock and a stamp is visible between the sawtooths and the grip. The frog is ok, though rivets are a bit rusty. The stamp says Sattlerinnung, Wiessbaden, 1916. There is a black square on top of this with a number 1 in (not sure)

Again, all inputs are appreciated. Many thanks in advance

Your piece is a S84/98naS, Sawback version of S84/98nA for NCOs, the frog is probably for butcher S98/05, nice marked .

Rasmus,

Maybe the incorrect frog, I wouldn't know ..? .. however, a fairly rare and interesting bayonet in collectible condition. Do a small bit of cleaning and maintenence and a bit of research on these, I bet you'll keep it! wink

Best!

Bill

Hi

Thanks for the fast answers (great forum) :-)

The frog is the actual one handed out at that time I was told. But everything about bayonets was as I understand a big mix of many types and model.

And Bill, you are right, the more I read about it, the more I want to keep it ;-)

And sorry for asking, but by cleaning, what do you mean (methods etc.? I do not have the skills of you guys with many years of experience. To be skilled it takes time as everything else in life.

I have a bayonet just like this one with the same maker. What makes it stand out it also has a Naval unit mark W.K.83. I or nobody else has seen another 84/98 saw back with markings like this.

Hello, some oiling and carefully cleaning of pommel would probably help, but sometime is better no agresive cleaning, because the patine would be lost. The Koeller S84/98 and sawback is a good piece in any collection.

Nice ww1 rig 84/98 in the harder to find sawback often refered to as "Machine gunner bayonet, Pioneer and NCO" agree frog is probably 98/05 butcher bayonet due to its width. timothy
