I was sure that I had started a thread on Eickhorn pattern etches, but I can`t find it here at all.
So, I will start with this latest SOS find, a scarce double etched short bayonet with the 3222 Panzer etch on the obverse and a dedication to Panzer Unit 24 on the reverse.
A Panzer dedication is the Holy Grail for etched bayo collectors like me.

The above bayonet completes what I call my Panzer trifecta.
I now have a short, stag gripped single etched 3222, a short double etched stag gripped 3222-Panzer Abwehr Abteilung 5 and a short double etched 3222- Panzer Abteilung 24.

The 3219 etch by Eickhorn is the most commonly found of their etch patterns.
This one is a long double etched version. The 3219 double Wehrmacht eagle on one side and a dedication to Nachrichten Abt 25 on the other.

This is also a long double etch Eickhorn. It has the 3219 etch on one side and a dedication to Pionier Bat 15 on the other. Note that this reverse etch is slightly different than the one in the previous post... it has a one line dedication and additional border lines.

An interesting variation on the previous post is this long double etched with the 3219 pattern on one side and a dedication to the same Pionier unit, but to its Company 2. This is a 2 line etch without the second set of borders.
It also has a distributor mark to J. Hommel.

Here is a very rare double etch bayonet with the 3219 etch on one side and a rare dedication to Bicycle unit 1 out of Tilsit.
I got this one in trade for a rare Pack etch.

Here is another etch that is pretty hard to find.
It is a short double etch bayonet with the 3219 etch on one side and the rare Gebirg Pionier 54 etch on the other. Mountain troops and Pionier troop etch are difficult to find on their own... the combination of the two made my day when I found this.

While blued examples are rarely found, other colours are also possible.
here is an orange coloured 3219 etch.

I have never seen or heard about the Bicycle unit and those blued and orange colored are gems.

The Eickhorn 3220 etch pattern has the crossed rifles near the tip and the Wehrmacht eagle near the crossguard. It is the second most commonly found etch pattern on Eickhrn marked bayonets.
This is a short bayonet, double etched with the 3220 etch on one side and a dedication to Infantry Regiment 32 as a one line with double borders.

The Eickhorn catalogue shows the etch pattern 3232 with the Luft eagle close to the tip and the Flak gun close to the grip.
I do not have that, but do have a variation on that pattern where the flak gun is close to the tip and a Wehrmacht eagle is close to the grip.

A pattern not found in the Eick Catalog and a walk in to the 2011 MAX show, this is a short, stag gripped pommel etched bayonet. It has a variant pommel etch that uses the Luft gulls instead of the Luft eagle.

An SOS pickup, this is a long single etched Eickhorn bayonet.
The etch is a shooting prize to a machine gun unit dated 1935.
It ahs the heavy early fittings and an early double oval serrated tail TM.

There are a handful of etched bayos on my bucket list and this is one of the top two.
You can find this type of bayonet in the Eickhorn catalogue as model 1681, Enlisted Man's Honour Bayonet.
It is also the same one as pictured in Wayne's book on pages 78 to 82, albeit with the addition of a portopee along the way.
Here is why this is so amazing and why it just had to be added to my collection:
1) it is an etch and bayonet pattern found in the Eickhorn catalogue as model 1681.
2) it has beautiful stag grips.
3) it has amazing cast patterns on the pommel and the crossguard and the top of the pommel.
4) it has a distributor mark, Anton Schweyer Munchen, on the spine.
5) it is a dedication to service in the 6th Unit of the Land Police Munich.
6) it has the small double oval serrated tail TM that I have found only on another special purchase, a shooting prize.
7) it is featured in Wayne's book.
8) it is in Mint- condition.

Just arrived from the Cashi collection is this short double etch Eickhorn.
The obverse has the common 3219 etch. The reverse is dedicated to Recon Unit 4, Squadron 2.
Why am I excited about this... well , let me tell you that I have the dedications to Recon 4, Squadrons 3 and 4 already and this is a nice addition to the set. It is also a bit different in format if you look at the comparison.

The Eickhorn 3227 etch is one of the hardest ones to find. It depicts a training exercise, I assume, with a group of men running across a field.
Fresh from the Cashi collection, is this short bladed double etch Eickhorn bayonet. On one side, we see a darkened (faded blued or faded blackened) panel with the name of Werner Ostmaier. On the other side, we see the 3227 etch.
The only thing about this bayonet that raised a question for me was the lack of the typical Eick fleur de lys bookends. But, the use of the same pattern as on the Eick etched swords for the bookends laid that concern to rest.

Fresh from the Cashi Collection is this short single etched bayonet by Eickhorn.
It is a shooting prize award for 4 IR 61, Munich, and dated 1939. It has the 35-41 seated squirrel TM and a neat set of grip insignia.
When I saw this on the site, I knew that I had to have it to join its squirrel family in the Great White North.

These all may be somewhat different (Citation to Military Units) but they all have one thing in common. They are ALL Eickhorn examples, they just "talk" to you. All are beautifully produced and have a quality
very hard to match. I would like some of you European collectors to carefully look at these pieces and remember what you see.

Here is a long double etched Eickhorn.
On one side you see the standard 3219 etch with the two Wehrmacht eagles, the most commonly found etch pattern by Eickhorn. On the dedication side, you will find the reason that I acquired this bayonet... a dedication to Observation Unit 35 (Beobachtungs Abteilung 35), my very first observation unit etch.
Not only is this rare, but it is in beautiful shape.

And, fresh from the Kashi collection is this short double etched Luftwaffe bayonet.
On one side we find the short version of the 3231 Luftwaffe etch..the Luftwaffe eagle at the tip, the observation plane near the crossguard and no fleur de lys bookend near the crossguard since this is a short blade.
On the other side we see the name of the recipient, Arno Hecker, inside of the standard fleur de lys bookends and frame.
Two things make this bayonet very special, the rarity of the short version of a scarce etch and the dedication on the obverse, something that is almost never seen.

As you all know by now, I like Eick!
And, finding a Gebirg Jager etch on a stag gripped bayonet is one of the highlights of my collecting career.
Here is a short, double etched beauty.
On one side, we find the 3220 crossed rifle etch in the short pattern, which means that it is missing the bottom bookend to make it fit the blade.
The reverse has the dedication to Gebirgs Jager Regt 98.
And, did I mention the beautiful stag grips.
This great bayonet goes well with my Gebirg Pionier and my Gebirg Artillery Eickhorns.

Not in the Eickhorn catalogue, but found occasionally is a Luftwaffe etch that has some gulls in the panel closest to the blade tip.
So, why did I buy this from the Cashi collection, because...
Simply because this is a long version of the etch. I already had the short version, but this etch is a variant...there are fleur de lys bookends at both ends of the etch. The short version only has the bookend near the tip of the blade.
So, a long, single etched Luftwaffe gulls bayonet. And, the short etch to compare.

Also, Eickhorn produced a Luftwaffe etch that featured a Luftwaffe eagle in the first panel.
Again, this is on a long blade with the two fleur de lys bookends.
And, again, I show you a short etch to compare.

Also, from the Cashi Collection is what I call the Trifecta of artillery etched bayonets.
It is a long blade, double etched bayonet with a Pioniere hilt.
The long blade means that, as above, it has the two bookends, the dedication to an artillery unit is good, the fact that it is Artillery regiment No 1 makes it great. The Pioniere hilt just adds icing to the trifecta cake.

Here is a short bladed, single etched piece that has the plain jane dedication etch typically found on the reverse of Eickhorn double etched blades.
But, wait... it is a dedication that loosely translates as `From the Officer Korps of the 6th Thuringen Infantry regiment 95`. probably a going away or retirement gift to a well loved superior, truly a one of a kind.

Here is a very rare long triple etched shooting prize by Eickhorn.
What makes this rare, you ask? Well...
1 - It has super stag grips
2 - It has a spine etch
3 - There are two grip emblems for 'The best Shooter' and '1938'
4 - The obverse etch is the rare 3227 Men in Field pattern that is shown in the catalogue both as a sword and as a bayonet pattern. This is the exact one with the eagles at both ends with feet to each other. You can also see this pattern in Wayne's book on pages 88-9.
5 - The reverse etch is a sword pattern etch.
6 - The crossguard and the pommel are hand dimpled to give a rough pattern somewhat like the hammered scabbard effect found on some Kriegsmarine daggers.
Here are some pictures. I found this on Joe Polsinelli's table at the SOS.

I have an etched bayonet that was my father's. Was told it was an officers dress or parade bayonet. No makers mark stamped on it anywhere. I was told it was real and most likely made in a small mom and pop shop. It has a stag horn handle and the blade is etched on both sides.The blade is near perfect with a shiny mirror finish. It has red felt in the groove of the handle. One side has a wehrmacht eagle with its wings halfway open holding a swastika and a German inscription that I was told says "for my time in the service". The other side has the same eagle and 4 men on horseback riding into battle. Does anyone have any info or insight into this bayonet? Any help would be greatly apreciated. Thank you.

I am posting Ronro's pictures.. had to resize them to get them to post here.
Very poor pictures, but from what I can see, this looks like the bayonet pictured in Wayne's book on pages 51-52. Based on that, as well as the poor bookends that you can see on the photos and other etch flaws, I would have to say that this is a reproduction etched blade and is not anything that one would want in their collection.

Thank you. This has been informative. On the front under the chrome in the Ricasso area you can see letters coming through under the chrome nickel plating, but we can not make it out entirely. It definitely has an "ma"at the end. I know the photos aren't great, I am sorry about that.

The poorly fitted stag grips are also a giveaway that this bayonet is not proper.

My latest addition to the Eickhorn etched bayonet stable is this short double etch.
The obverse has the common 3219 double Wehrmacht eagle tine in service etch.
The reverse reads as 'Unterstab II / A.R. 60'. I translate this as 'Regimental staff non commisioned officer II, Artillery Regiment 60'.
The condition is very nice, Near Mint to be exact. And the dedication is one that I have never seen before, although I did find a reference to a picture album to Unterstab I, AR 33 for sale a while back on another site.
IMHO, this is a pretty rare unit dedication to find.

Hello JohnZ, in the "Allgemeine Milit�r Zeitung Jahrgang 2" (General Military Newspaper) from 1827 it is written:
Each Artillerie regiment consists of a Oberstab, a Unterstab and 10 companies. To the Oberstab do belong 1 colonel, 1 LtCol., 1 Mj and the Adjudant; To the Unterstab do belong 1 Adjudant, 1 Quartiermeister, 1 Feldprediger, 1 Oberarzt, 1 Tanbour and 2 Pfeiffer.
As said, from 1827, but I think it is somehow comparable. Btw it is the first time I have heard the term of "Unterstab".

As I said above, I did find a reference of a sale item, a photo album for Unterstab I, AR 33. I also saw references to Unterstab in some articles on very early 1900s military formations.

Here is a 1681 pattern honour bayonet. It has the rarely found double oval serrated tail with no CE maker mark and is known to us with a presentation etch in the catalogue and in Wayne's book.
However, this example has a beautiful plain blade with the engraved pommel and crossguards.

the last dress bayonet you call honor bayonet thats a killer piece and reminds me of the one i found for a dear friend of mine same oak leafed pomel and cross guard had the hj diamond in the handle i think that bayonet was called the hitler youth leaders honor dress bayonet not sure if it was Eickhorn or what maker it was but the workmanship was surperb and i never seen another one and thats atleast twenty five years ago john both of these bayonets are certainly the cats meow and scarce as hens teeth and hens dont have any teeth god bless thanks for showing these rare to find bayonets keep up the great work god bless andy militarynut

Those "Ehrenseitengewehre" are very rare and do "normally" come with stag grips. Such one with the black backelite grips now must be at least 10-50 times more rare than the "normal" variant. Never have seen one before. Nice!
@Militarynut: These socalled and very rare "HYouth leader honor dress bajonets" (up to now we collectors do not know what they really were) with the pommel ETCHINGS - NO engraving like the bayonet shown here (etchings in three variants) are a total other kind of edged weapon. These do not have the groove for rifle mounting real bayonets do have and their origin has been trench knives. Contrary to these (real) bayonets shown here.

I have already shown you pictures of my bicycle battalion etched bayonet (Radfahr Batt. 1 Tilsit) and, thanks to a tip from Mat J on this very forum, I managed to get this small photograph of a bicycle troop dated 1940 (I think). I found it on fleabay and it really goes well with the bayonet.

Just arrived is this short blade, double etched artillery bayonet.
The obverse sports the 3221 artillery etch with cannon at the front. The reverse sports the rare horse drawn artillery pattern 3228.
Great to have added to my collection,

I have been looking for an artillery pommel etch for quite a while. I was happy to find this and it also has the artillery cannon 3221 blade etch as a bonus!
This has a short single etched blade.

I owe much of what I find to my many friends here on GDC and in the collecting community. Many eyes out there helping me out over the years.
I think that I got the tip on camera here on GDC, a Sony Mavica. Old technology, but it takes really good closeups and produces images less than 50KB so they can be posted on any website and look fine on most computer screens.

And, this is a gulls pommel etch on a short single etched blade with the gulls luftwaffe motif.
There are some hilt issues, especially around plating lift, but, what the heck, the etches, pommel and blade combination make this a worthwhile addition to the Great White North collection.

- the artillery etch on a 3221 artillery blade etch short
- the eagle pommel etch on a plain short
- the crossed rifle infantry etch on a 3220 infantry blade etch long
- gulls luft pommel etch on a luft eagle blade etch long
- gulls luft pommel etch on a plain blade short stag grips
- gulls luft pommel etch on a luft gulls blade etch short
In the hunt for the airplane luft, the flak gun and the panzer pommel etches.

John, Very nice and incredible Eickhorn's baios collection.. I have an Honour baio with some differences : - the grip is fitted with bakelite grip plates. - the blade is plain. - and the squirell is the late one which is "looking over the shoulder".. I'm also aware of a "classic" honour bayonet IE with horn grip plates and etched blade with a dedication of the 5th Police unit in München, and of course the "Anton Schweyer München" engraving on the spine. MY plain bladed baio is not as nice as Yours, and no comlete but it bears the late Eickhorn trade mark..
