It certainly does not have much patina. Look inside the grip and see if there is a peened/bent over brass nipple.

Yes, so that button has been at least reinserted into the grip, as the shaft is straight. It's hard to say if it's original button without seeing the reverse of the button itself. I have some Reddick buttons, and the reverse is made for a lapel pin, so the shaft is obviously wrong. They are usually very shiny/glossy, but some 2000 grit sandpaper will remove that as I had done on this button. It looks very convincing from the front(top button in photo), and makes a good replacement if you cannot find an original. Original SS runes buttons are very expensive, if you can even find one. Pictured here are 3 original buttons from broken grips. Notice the brass nipple, and how it is bent over.

vintagetimenow Thank you for the pictures. I have the same doubts ... I agree without seeing the reverse of the rune , I can`t confidently answer on this question. Now it`s 50/50

I think the rounded leg of the SS is a clue, compared to originals. Interesting how this one has a yellow, perhaps even brass, nipple, which if bent over and aged would be hard to tell it's fake when still in the grip. Luckily the textured back reveals the true nature of the button.

I would like to come out and say I am the seller of this SS handle it's from a dagger I parted out, I did have it listed for sale as original but thanks to an intrested party we decided to have it looked at here first, we were all a little concerned about it's appearence and thanks to the doubts here by members I decided to remove the runes and see what the back side looked like and vala... it was a fake..with added brass nipple... pictures were taken and sent to interested party. I then took down my listing and canceld the sale. then pictures were sent here so that we all my learn. anyone interested in knowing more please ask.

zoza, Tell us why you think it is bad
Everyone, most that I have seen in place had a copper barrel pin as was shown above, I say copper as the end visible down the hole was green. Also, the looked sheared off as shown above. The real ones I have seen out of the grip were sheared off also, and I surmise that a steel tube or special tool was tapped with a hammer to do this.
Please look at the top of this forum at the second subject about runes.
Thanks Dave

Dave, the back of the button looks brand new. Plus, I have not seen a stippled back like that. If you have pictures of an original one that looks similar, I'd love to see it. Thanks, John

John,
I asked zoza to explain his one word reply of "Bad". I believe that posters deserve an explanation when someone thinks the item in question is not correct.
Quite a while back there were complaints about unexplained negative opinions so we changed the rules.
Dave

ah, makes sense. It's hard to transmit the intonations of normal speech in a text. Thanks, John
