It's SS marked and came with a Sword hanger. Not sure if the two are associated but thought that may provide a clue. Thanks in advance for your assistance. Paul

I have had one of these and could not work it out until seing a picture of an SS-VT trooper with steel helmet suspended from his waist belt, hands free, and guessed that would take a heavy duty accoutrement.. Will try to locate the pic' and scan.

Cadets from SS-Fuhrerschule Tolz on a route march with full pack. Cadet in foreground has helmet suspended leaving his hands free. The other marchers have done the same although you cannot see this. This accoutrement is not listed in the Clothing/Equipment price list for Allgemeine SS but there were seperate lists for SS-VT and SS-TV which I have not seen. Hope this helps; doesn't actually show the piece of kit you have but I think that is what it was for, to suspend a helmet and/or perhaps other substantial items.
