Following are pictures of a Himmler blade just sold on eBay by "hussarmetal".

New guys ... say less than 50 posts, tell me what you see.

After they get a shot, others can chime in, but not until I say so. laugh

OK..I'll give it a shot.

1. Maker mark is too far up the blade.
2. Himmler inscription is too far down the blade. The inscription and the MM are too close together.
3. On the Himmler inscription- the line coming off the last letter "r" looks too long. The bottom of the first "I" doesn't look correct. Herzicher "h" bootoms are not correct. the "R" is not correct bottom right leg space is too far out from left leg. The top loop in "R" is too wide. The line at the top is too straight. The "H" looks suspect in both the middle initial and first letter in Himmler. The inscription letters overall do not look authentic.

4. MM and motto and inscription look laser etched.
5. In motto...Meine middle bar looks too thick.
6. "heisst" letters are too thick. Back line in esset too pointy at the bottom. Bad lettering in motto overall.
7. The center ridge on both sides of the blade look too high and sharp.

Well that's about it for me. I hope this isn't a "trap" and I fell into it lol.

Thanks for the excercise Dave.

Ed

P.S. I think I might have less than 50 posts in the dagger category but if I have more I'll understand if I'm disqualified and my post is deleted. No worries. The excercise was still good for me. It's good to be challenged on this information. It helps you get better.
Cheers,
Ed

That's good Dave. Thanks. I really am a novice with daggers but I love learning about them. So much to learn.

I'll anxiously await the results on this.

Thanks Dave! I'll bite as this is exactly what I would like to do and learn from.

1. Etching - It appears to me that this is not acid etched or hand engraved (I would expect more the former but I believe some MM are hand etched). Regardless, it appears to be too "straight" and may be machine done (?laser?).

2. Blade it appears to lack cross-graining which I would expect though this could have been polished away. Also, the blade does not appear to have been forged looking at the tang. The tang lacks indications of forging and appears to suggest that it was cut rather than forged. I also suspect that the tang marking is off but I would have to few references to evaluate this.

I see some guys type faster than I and they also make some really good points!

3. I can't view the MM while writing but it appears to be a bit elongated or off in some fashion in addition to the comments I made concerning etching in #1.

I need to study the photos again but those things hit me right away. Am I hot or cold?!

I really want to learn from this. Sorry if it is redundant for "ol hands" who have had the luxury of handling many of these. The real pressure comes on when I stumble onto something like this and have to react in the moment while trying to collect yourself after the shock of seeing it. This can taint my judgement....a self control thing I guess.

Thanks Dave. That is helpful to those of us learning (but aren't we all). Is there anything we mentioned that you can elaborate on or clarify. I'm still a bit curious about the tang mark. Is it correct (sorry I did not dig out my Exploring The Dress Daggers of the SS. Tried to do this one off hand.

Thanks again - Rob
