I managed to acquire this matching ,'37 date Gebruder Heller today at a local pawn shop. It came with a frog by W.Dophelde/Breckwede. Taking the grips off I found that they and the flashguard were numbered to the bayonet. Was this something done by Heller or by a workshop sometime during the bayo's service life?

Hello Len, nice piece, the screws looks a little long, is the flashguard and grips proofed with 214 proof? The grips could be stamped later, is there any other serials? thanks and best regards,Andy

So then should be all ok, the cleaning rod channel area on the right grip looks like something carved in, but probably is not a number, what for other stamps are on the grips? thanks,Andy

Nice score, Len! As a rule, earlier military S84/98 T3s had numbered components; flashguard, grips, and catch assembly components.
Usually this matches the bayonet's serial number on the blade. However, some may be numbered internally to a assembly number found stamped on the tang. Commercial S84/98 T3 are often found numbered in this fashion as well. In addition, the round (early) flashguard holes were later changed to oval, which allowed for easier assembly and required less precision.
