Well, at long last, I have an WMW example. This came from Joe Pankowsky and Steve Wolfe who bought it one step away from the vet's family. Maybe Ron can tell me how many he knows of, but from his book and the one Don had, I know of serial numbers 48, 58, 96, 107.

Stamping. No one knows which school these were made for. Unless a graduation marked example, or info from the family of the owner comes to light, it may remain a mystery.

These daggers have some unique characteristics as pointed out in Ron's book, such as the lug shape.
Based on the set shape of the leather, this frog has been on this dagger for a very long time.

Pommel nut is rounded compared to most. Here's an SA nut for comparison.

Crossguards are internally unmarked, and the tang on this example is also unmarked.

Maker mark detail. Notice, when enlarged, this is no laser etched perfection, but old school acid etching.

Thank you for sharing this very scarce NPEA maker with us.
I often ask me why ALL NPEA makers had etched there letters so thin. Bud did not on SA daggers.

Thanks for sharing John. NPEA was the only place that mark variant was used, correct?

You owe me one John. I told Joe P. to call you when he called me about this one. I didn't know if you had this variation, so I told him to give you first shot. I only know of the ones you list here. I am sure that WMW was utilized by only one school and fairly late in the game, probably one of the eastern located ones and no initials on the crossguards, so we can't tell which school it was until we find a graduation marked piece. WMW evidently utilized parts unique to their operation as the pommel, scabbard, crossguards and blade are different from the other makers. Ron Weinand

John,
What can I say? An incredibly rare bird & a thing of beauty. Well done indeed!
Paul,
I've seen this particularly Weyersberg mark on a pair of HJ knives along with a couple of NPEA daggers. That's about it.

Thanks Guys, I'm a happy camper to be able to add it to the collection. Thanks too Ron, for steering Joe my way. I have added a few since this picture, but I not sure it's worth the time to shoot a newer picture.
I would like some other NPEA items to go with the daggers, but they seem to be in short supply.
John

John: My former #58 also had the "6 or 9" under the scabbard lug along with the domed tang nut. Congrats.

Here's a photo from that site, to preserve with this thread. This is the lowest number I have seen. Still have the aluminum crossguards. Bayonet lug looks to be the correct shape. Scabbard is probably repainted. I like the frog. I'm not sure about the buffer pad. Looking at mine, the lower crossguard has the blade indentations which makes think they didn't come with a felt buffer pad.

I have a little trouble with this one John, as I have yet to see a student dagger by WMW with aluminum crossguards. Also, the pommel nut is not like the WMW unique ones as on the others like ours. Ron Weinand

Gru ALMA

Gru ALMA Hello, in my collection there is a NPEA dagger mm WMW with ALUMINIUM CROSSGUARDS and #22. The pupil did live at Donaueschingen, the next NPEA school would be Rottweil. Perhaps I can help with my contribution to further knowledge concerning NPEA schools. I would like to show pics of my dagger but i am not able. Greetings ALMA. Hallo Alma! Hello Alma! First let me welcome you to the forum.. Send me the pics and I will try to publish them here. Please do contributions in english as nearly nobody here can correspond in german therefore here no answer untill now... It is interesting to hear from another marked aluminiom crossguard WMW, directly from the pupil itself, which seems to proof the originality of these daggers! Regards,

Thanks Wotan. This makes me believe that WMW had at least two separate runs of NPEA Student Daggers for this one school. I would love to know which school it was. Maybe those in Germany can find out from an original student who might still have his own service dagger.

Ron, glad I could support. What do you think of the obviously very uncommon washer of this dagger?
An additional fact, sent by ALMA, is, that the headscrew of his dagger is from nickled iron. Regards,
