I don't see any SS marking either.
David. What makes you thin k this dagger is associated with the SS?

The thread is titled "KREBS ARTIFICIAL DAMASCUS 2ND LUFT". I donn't think David is saying it is SS. Maybe it just got posted in the wrong forum.

THANKS, MEN. HOW 'SS' GOT INTO IT I DUNNO! WILL CHECK.
AS TO THE GRIP I THOUGHT RECENT RESEARCH SHOWS ALL TROLONS STARTED OUT WHITE THEN CHANGED OVER TIME DEPENDING ON CLIMATE, STORAGE, OZONE, ETC. TO YELLOWS AND ORANGES AND RED.
BUT WAIT - I JUST DISASSEMBLED AND THE COLOR GOES RIGHT THRU. WHY?
ALSO I FOUND A CURVING FORGE MARK ON THE TANG -- ANYONE RECOGNIZE IT? LOOKS LIKE 'ESCOT' WITH STARS AT THE ENDS.

Thats a very interesting Luft David! I have very little experience with them but Krebs does seem to be a known WW2 maker of these artificial demascus types...Kevin.
It's ALL in the DETAILS!!.......

In Wittman's Luft book, the CJ Krebs artificial Damascus blade is touted as one of the few original makers of such.
Lots of fakes with other maker marks.
This one is a beauty, with or without the white grip.

BUT WAIT - I JUST DISASSEMBLED AND THE COLOR GOES RIGHT THRU. WHY? Ive seen some through and through colored grips (other than white and black), but to date they have invariably failed some basic tests, and IMO are postwar not period. With the example here showing what happens when you get past what it looks like on the exterior. As to the why? - that involves a number of factors. With the first being that in Germany there was more than one maker of the cast phenolic resins. With each batch of resins being assembled, cast, and cured individually - so no two were ever identical, even from the same maker. With period testing showing that UV light was the greatest factor in color changes with a 90% failure rate in testing different formulations. FP
