Dion I think I would take the advice of John Z and Ron W posted over at Wehrmacht

I would not give this one the kiss of death yet, and in hand inspection would clear some things up, As Ron W, stated most of the etched blades are plated but i can tell you if you go to the 3 biggest dealers on the net you can find etched armys without being plated that are 100% good, so i disagree with rons statement of 99% are plated, I would show it to tom wittman for his opinion

I am no expert on etched blades so my only observation is that there is age in the blade and the age runs through the etch. So if it is post war then it is a very old. Also if you are faking up why just a common old Leutnant? And David? doesn`t add up to me. JMO. Roy is also right that unplated etched blades are not that uncommon.

I have a similar pattern etch on an Eickhorn marked blade and pictured in Wittman's Luft book.

Note that it is an Eickhorn type etch with the fleur del lys book ends.

Why would Eickhorn produce etches for another blade maker?

I too am not an expert on the subject, and I do understand that the bayonet, Army, Luft, etches follow a pattern as per maker, but what I would like to know is if indeed "these type" etches are done by the factory or let say for lack of better words "aftermarket", jeweler, or perhaps an engraver, which may have offered this type of etch after they were issued. That would explain the similarity's of the etch between the two different makers...
