Please post the photos of the darkest motto's from your SS & SA daggers. It's an interesting topic as I know that a few of the SA makers painted their etched letters, while 99% or more use a darkening agent that collectors call burnishing.
Here is a Kober SA that I would consider having a painted motto, done by this firm.

Under slight magnification you can see the actual paint in the letters of the motto.

Here is a Malsch. I've associated this firm with painted motto's as well. This one shows wear to the paint but enough still remaining that makes it much darker than the typical burnished blades.

While the Boker etches were some of the darkest that are seen on SS daggers, it doesn't look like an actual paint was used when compared to the Kober and Malsch.

Here is a Heller. You can actually see the wear to what I would consider to be painted motto's in their etches.

This M36 SS blade is nearly mint. But as you can see, these early Chain daggers had not only a light etch to the motto's, but the actual etch itself was light an not as deep as we see many of the trademarked pieces.

Rich,Both of those examples do look top notch and appear to be of the period maker painted variety. How do they look under a loop ?

Very interesting topic, JR!
Here are 2 Kober SA's: one with the black and one with the greyer motto, I almost would believe extra black was an option at the Kober firm...
Best regards,
Herman

This Haenel also has the black treatment to the etch, although I'm not sure that it was paint. Might be some substance other than paint.

A most magnificent collection of darkened mottos ,, but has caught my eye the most in all these beauties posted is the font style,, and i like the Melzer & Feller font type the most. Almost a gothic vampire type font. I have seen some of these types on the smaller cottage makers and also on Gebr. Heller Marienthal. Nice post gents,, here is my Pfeilringwerk and Otto Simon darkened mottos. I like the font on the Otto Simon.

From what we have now seen, there most definitely are a more than a few makers that used this special darkening material in their etches. Like Skyline mentioned, I'm not ready to call it paint but it sure is intriguing on how the material held up.
Thank you for the posts gents............. maybe we can get some additional ones.

Hey JR I forgot to point out on my Otto Simon ( see attached photo ) that the area I circled in orange is painted and the rest of the motto looks to be burnished. A in hand inspection will show this difference.
