What do you think the best or worst machine is ?
I would nominate the Browning .50 as best ever, whether on a tripod, in the wing of a fighter, or in a dual or quad mount.

I'd go with the Ma Deuce also, as our troops talked about facing a MG 42 nest, the Germans talked about facing the M2 .50 cal.The worse would have to be the Italian light and medium machine guns of WWII - complicated feeding mechanisms requiring lubricated cartridges of very limited power and range. What could be worse in the Western Desert ?

The Germans and Japanese had very effective light machine guns in WWII.
I would say that best all over LMG to date would be the M60 using the 7.62 NATO round.

I like the M1919, lighter and easier to carry and still has the hitting power,, but not as ripping as the 50cal. The "ma duece" can reck anyones picnic under a tree and i seen one of them split a tree in half,, where as the 30 cal can spray an area quickly before anyone can decide whats going on. Hands down for me the MG 42 the most effective and a great attention getter after firing off a 500 round burst.

In the Army, '61-'64, fired the 1919A4, the A6 and the M60 as well. The M60 was nice but from what I have seen, not quite the weapon the MG42 was/is.

mg42 is high on the list. good in the light role =bipod, good in the heavy role = tripod , major attempt to use in the a.a role ,easy to use, rate of fire great (even the m-60 could not match, but that was what they were trying for). fastest barrel change of any m.g., low maintenance item. but construction was still a little evolved & was not that much cheaper to make than the m.g.34. Worse close to the top far sure, the light & medium Italian m.g.s. jeff

Like lloyd & Jeff, I would vote for the MG42 as the best machine gun even when compared with today's crop of weapons. Aberdeen even tried to adapt it to the .30 cartridge during WWII. As for the M60, close but no cigar!

Unfortunately, I can't upload it to this site. It's only 7 seconds long, but allows one to hear the ungodly rate of fire. If you are interested, send me your email address and I'll forward it along to you. dengai ATnetzero.net. You know what to do with the " AT "

Of course the Vulcan is an awesome death dealer BUT not very useful for a squad to carry but I do understand there is a smaller version however.

The "mini guns" are in a different category but there is no doubt of their devastating firepower. Hauling ammo for it is tough.
