Afternoon Guys,

Just got this one from my father after he visited a small local militaria fair, i will start with the story told to us in good faith.

The guy did not have a stall as such at this fair but attended to try and shift a few items he had gathered over the years military related, the story he has told us is acceptable but its the story before he owned it which would be interesting.

He was given the ring around 1970 after showing an interest in the war with fellow workers as an apprentice, these workers had participated during WWII themselves. Various guys brought small items in for him to have which they had aquired during the period, one of which was this ring. When he was given the ring he said the skull had definition, however later on in his life he became an apprentice builder and wore the ring daily. Over time he decided to remove the ring as it was wearing away rapidly with his trade and nature of work, he did say he cut his finger badly at one point and the ring had to be removed by the hospital. However he had the ring repaired at a later date at a local jewellers (you can see the marks near the start of the band, possibly a replacement band? not the original?) he even had the scar on his finger to prove it.

All in all the ring meant a great deal to this chap and he was reluctent to sell it, even his wife said have one last look as you will never see it again, and why did you even sell it in the first place, The asking price was not high as the guy had no idea on value or that these rings existed as such. I believe his side of the story, but not sure on the rings life before he was given it.

The engraving on the inside says 'otto scrus 1941' done rather basically by hand, on the outside band very faint letters can be seen 'dais' ?

So.. is the ring real? or a very early fake? memento mori? bikers ring?

It's really old.. I like it.. It has a 'split band' design band,,very popular pre and early war..
I think it is not a made for retail ring,,but a custom made to order ring from a jeweler for a customer..

Thanks Gaspare, it certainly has a haunting look. I was unsure with the band being thick, no hallmark, casting point, and the biker theory. But their is too much provenance and feel to it for the ring to be fake.

As for otto scru, no look finding any information online.
