Yes but the seller is a honest person and sells it as a fake Rohm.

Yes Gottlieb but will the person that buys it be so honest IMO he could do the hobby a favour and dremel fake next to the trademark in inch high letters or better still destroy that blade

My German is rusty but as far as I can see he says he "can't guarentee whether it's right or not" which isn't exactly saying it's a fake either

There are plenty of people who will never be able to afford a real Rohm. This would fit the bill for them. We are quick to say distroy something that dosen't belong to us.

Am I missing something here? Is it a fake because Louper didn't make Rohms or is the etch bad?

If you want to criticise someone first walk a mile in their shoes. Then, when they come after you, you'll be a mile ahead and they'll be barefoot.

I don't remember if Louper made a Rohm or not. But the etch is post war in my opinion.

Neither Fisher or Seigert recognise Louper as a Rohm maker

I find the word "fake" used wrongly, to often within the collecting community.

It is correct to call an item a "fake" if it is being offered as the genuine artical and found to be something other.

If, however, an item is advertised correctly and the seller advises during the course of the sale that something is not period or correct with it. Then it should not be labelled a "fake". The dagger on offer here is a genuine period piece that has been post war modified and the seller/owner has attested to that fact.

I have a genuine SS dagger in my collection with a postwar applied Himmler dedication. When I come to sell it that is how it will be described. I would never be able to own a genuine one so this is the next best thing, especially as the inscription is quite well done.

I do not agree with the practice of modifying genuine items for profit. Not only are the perps destroying something unique and precious they are muddying the waters of all hobbies. In years to come when there is a change of expertise in the market place these items will be passed off and traded as the real artical.

We only have to look at the art world for evidence of this fact. It is rare for any work of art to be subjected to scientific scrutiny. Instead the reliance is upon expert "opinion"

I often wonder how many "genuine" works of art would stand up to modern day physics and forensics. The rumour persists that even the Mona Lisa (lost for many years) on display in the Louvre is a copy.

Just an observation on my part because I sold a post war etched bayonet and I told the buyer it was post war.The etch was very well done and you would have been hard pressed to find fault with it. I saw the same bayonet blade (I could tell by the MM and the way it was stamped very lightly at one corner) refitted into a new grip and for sale at a dealers table for 10 times the price.

I mentioned to him that I had once owned the blade (purchased at Ciney in Belgium as POSTWAR) but because other "expert" dealers had found nothing wrong, he was selling it as REAL. I can only assume it is now pride of place in someones collection.

So I sold a modified item that is now FAKE!!!!

Shame the object has been distroyed like this but strongly agree with spock - nothing wrong with selling parts daggers or daggers with post war parts as long as it is mentioned in the item description. So this seller seams to be fair and I see no issue with that.
