This came out of the local woodwork, DAK stuff is about the only gear we find here... I don't really collect bayonets, so my knowledge on these is very thin. I've seen quite a lot of these locally, but never painted over like this one, and I can't really find much on-line with this kind of paint job.

Would you guys see this as acceptable, is the frog the correct vintage for the bayonet??? It's apparently been together since it was taken as a souvenir, so it should be right, but, is it?

I'd appreciate your comments on this one.

Thanks, Red

The frog is circa 1942, so while it could have been paired up back then, it probably was not the original to the bayonet when it was painted. As for the paint itself I don't see some of the signs common to the postwar painting of bayonets. And will have look some more at the images to see if I missed something. Regards, FP

Thanks Fred, much appreciated. I like your analytical view of items, so if there are any problems, please feel free... It looks like the rig has been together for a long time as there is some transfer/staining to the frog. I suspect the previous owner was unfortunately asked about matching numbers as the paint has been scratched in the area of the stampings, but the numbers do match.

Thanks, Red

Considering where you are (S. Africa) and appearance of both bayonet and frog, it exhibits every indication of an original issued bayonet. I acquired a WKC39 S84/98 in a blue luftwaffe tropical frog from a seller in Australia a few years back. The scabbard still had sand residue inside it. Same deal as the Aussies fought in N. Africa & were later withdrawn to serve in the pacific.

Red,
Personally, I like it! Although there is no way of ever knowing if the paint is wartime, it has all the indications of being good IMHO.
Here's a '42 Alcoso, albeit more of the "feldgrau" persuasion than DAK.

Thanks for posting Fred. Still looking for one of those blue tropical frogs....

DG;
I like your bayonet, too! I have a Kar98k byf44 which by serial number and components was made during the earlier part of that year. The piece was acquired via an ad in Shotgun News during the mid-1980s. Those fortunate enough to have collected back then and beyond may wax nostalgic about anxiously awaiting their next issue and what they might hope to find within it's pages. Of course now with The Internet, and everything seemingly going the auction route things aren't the same, but I digress...
When I received the rifle, I noticed it had a tint of green to the stock, and discovered it had been painted completely forest green at some time in the past. Thankfully removal of the paint had not harmed the wood, but it is unfortunate it had been done at all...
