There are many French hunting swords and daggers. Your memory doesnt need to wonder far to think of the many hunts with hounds and their country is large enough to be plentiful with game animals. I am not referring to the present times but over the past hundreds of years.
They have produced some fantastic and beautiful hunting pieces now called Cuttoes after their French name Couteaux de Chasse. Most of the shark skin scabbards seem to be French and they make the swords and daggers have an extra outstanding look and feel. The blades on the long pieces seem to run around 28 inches.
I believe they were almost overlooked by the German hunting dagger collectors in their quest for third period Hirschfangers. As you can see they have their own special high quality. Christies and Sotheby Auctions will prove this out with the prices they bring.

Ralph, A great collection of French hunting/forestry sidearms. Many of these lovely patterns are really exquisite and look to be every bit comparable in quality to their more familiar German counterparts. Anyone who enjoys German Hirschfnger should surely enjoy these extraordinary beauties. Many thanks for putting together another fine post for our enjoyment, if you have more please do post them as time allows ... Kind thanks and best regards! Bill

Ralph, WOW. I really like the French designs and these are great pieces. Really appreciate seeing them. I actually find them harder to locate than the German swords. I see many without scabbards or damaged leather. It is difficult to find ones as you have shown. Thanks again for showing and good to see you active on the site. James

Ralph,
There is no end to your spectacular collection! Imo a Hirschfanger is a Hirschfanger, and no matter what country they originate from, I like them all. You made my day, thank you.

Hello Hubertus.
These are beautiful daggers. With your permission, I have an older dirk that I was told was possibly French, that I would like to post for your comment. The design work on the langet and pommel area is hand chisseled..

Dear Jim, Thank you for your post and the photographs. I am sorry I cannot help you with the dirk as I have not followed this type of dagger. There is a lot of help out there and maybe some one knowledgeable will give us a helping hand. Sincerely, HUBERTUS

I received this very nice email from Wolfe Knives and he asked that I post the photographs to this Post. It is a beautiful French Hunting dagger. Sincerely, HUBERTUS
Hello Ralph I absolutely love the French daggers you posted on GDC. Thank you for sharing the photo's, I have been back to study them many times. I own one French dagger, and wanted to post it to contribute something to the thread. Unfortunately I can not post photo's. I have attached it here, and if you don't mind the trouble, you are welcome to post it in the thread. I collect German daggers, but picked this one up because of the condition and fine detailing.
Thank's again, Wolfgang

Interesting thread
Some of these pieces could easily pass for German examples, what are the typical attributes to a french hunting hirschfnger over that of a typical german piece. I like the hanger that is pictured above, I have a couple very similar that originally I thought were german but have since found out to be french. If anybody is interested in a couple of brocade hangers for there french hunting hirschfngers then please let me know as they are out of my collecting scope.
Thanks
Gary

Gary, Thank you for the photograph of the hangers and especially the gloves with their colorful flair that seem right in tune with the hangers. It would be nice to see your French pieces as I remember you had a very highly decorative one years ago. Sincerely, HUBERTUS

Ralph, These are really exceptional Hirschfnger, they must look fabulous displayed next to their German counterparts. The only problem is that you posted so many that some guys are bound to think they're all over the place ... Wolfgang, thanks for letting us have a look at your fine example too. These lovely hunting pieces are absolutely in a league of their own. Best! Bill
