Too often we forget that war is ugly, and that many of the things we collect were designed with one thing in mind.
Whenever I find a few bits of shrapnel or shell bits, I keep them as reminder.
The bottom piece is from my Great Uncle, who was in France in WW2, when a buzz bomb went down on their position. he ran around the back of a house, and the bomb exploded in the street, but this one piece went pinging around the corner as if it was chasing him, he said if he hadn't moved at the very last second, it would have "got him". He inscribed the date on it then & there as he felt it was his "lucky day"

when I lived in N.Y. I went to see the B-17 at Republic Field.There was an AAF vet who was an engineer on a B-17 he had a couple of pieces of flak that came into his plane.He told me when they saw the German fighters pull away they knew what was coming at them......Black clouds of flak.Worse than the fighters he said.

I like the grenade bits .That would ruin your day ..My grandfather has some shrapnel he got from Vietnam he took it out a a jeep that was hit while he was riding on it pretty big piece too. Also a good luck charm for him i guess..

Jerry, I just LOVE these things. I have a few of the WWI bit's in my collection myself. They are very left out of most collections but really have a IMPACT on a person when they handle them and really see what was flying through the air on a daily basis in the trenches in France. I dont have a grenade fragment yet though but hopefully will find one soon since I have several of the MKI type in my collection. Thanks for the photos GREAT STUFF ! Ron
