Does this look legit to you? Or like a broken off quillion that was cleaned up?

I personally would not risk it. The plate loss seems to indicate to me that it has had it broken off and then reshaped to look like a pioneer.

I think the 3rd picture tells the tale. This piece appears to be a standard KS98 that the crossguard has broken off of. Although the edge is rounded as on an original pioneer style hilt, Jan is correct in mentioning that the plating is not there as it is on the rest of the crossguard.

I wouldn't even think that it was originally this way unless the plating was intact. Even then I would have suspicions. The suspect area has suspect plate loss. Red flag.

That's exactly what I thought. It looks like the crossguard should protrude a little further too. The profile doesn't look quite right.

Thanks guys.
