Picked this one up yesterday.

More pics. Blade is near mint.

As ordinary as it may seem, these short dress bayonets are just great. I also have a Spitzer and they look great, especially the plating on the blade on my piece shows the same quality as on yours. Congrats there!

The Baron logo is a vase of flowers.

Baron is thought to be a trademark of Gottfried Weyersberg Söhne, KG, Solingen.

This is one of the marks used by C Gustav Spitzer. You can see it in Fisher's book and it is indicated as being found, as here, on bayonets.

I bought this short Spitzer with the other trademark the same day you bought yours. In similar condition and both with the non-carbine tip short blade. This one has the worn port and a nice felt backed frog.

Do some manufaturers only make the non-carbine tip short blade and others only the carbine tip?

What is the concensus about the patinization? I know most dagger lovers like it and most sword guys clean them up. How about the dress bayos?

You're correct, some blade manufacturers used short blades with a swedge while others (like your Spitzer) did not. Interestingly your short model has a wide blood groove which is something some bayonet collectors go for. I had a list somewhere of observations I've made over the last 10 years or so but can't seem to find it. If you had interest, many of those observations are posted in the fire bayonet thread here on the BCN forum.

Billy, you are correct that Terry has the inside track for my Baron. It's not for sale now however.....

Do we go with the dagger guys and leave as found or with the sword guys and clean them up?

IMHO, plated blades are less risky to clean up. You sure don't want any rust or plating lifting left alone, if you have it.

A little Simichrome to get rid of rust and the grungy green stuff and a wipe down with Renwax does it for me.

I leave daggers alone & lightly clean/polish KS98 & fire bayonets. For some reason, I'll clean the blade on a police bayonet but not touch the hilt patina. Not saying it's right or wrong but just the way I do it. John's right about a plated blade being less risky to clean, no crossgraining or a motto to ruin.

Plated blades do age so much better and can withstand cleaning so much better than the polished blade. I ten to shy away from cleaning myself, it's always easier to do something than to undo it.
