The back of the scabbard has some type of paper on the metal plate. It might be the original packaging wrap to protect the finish. This is the nicest M3 and M6 I have ever seen. The blade had a little bit of goo on it which might have been cosmoline.

Judging by the rest of the knife, I'd say that is the original protective backing paper.

Thanks Jerry.
I'm thinking that the backing paper might be original also. I'm going to leave it on unless I get absolute confirmation that it is not original. The darker areas on the blade is where the goo/cosmolene was. I also have the leather tie that was with it, but forgot to put it back on before I took the pictures. A Japanese frog was tied to this M6 scabbard with the leather tie. I don't know why as it was the only Japanese item in the group.
