I recently picked up a Springfield 1913 dated Patton sword. The hilt has a black "paint" like finish that flaking away. Was the black finish original or has someone applied a thin layer of paint over the original metal?

I have seen several of these with the black paint finish, so I would guess that it was done, but I don't know when. I have not had a "mint" example to go by. I will ask a few of my WW1 cav buddies who may know.
