I bought this as a kid for $5.00 from an army surplus store. What time frame is it from? The rim has seam at the front.

The presence of the front seam with the swivel bail would date it to post 1943, but with the blackened grey metal fittings I would say dates it to 1944. (By August of 1944 the seam moved to the rear) Nice helmet!

Thanks for the info. It was really nice before I played with for years as a kid. I fought a lot of backyard wars wearing that helmet.

What liner or liners would be correct for this helmet? Since I don't play army anymore, I'd like to get the helmet back close to original and retire it to the bookshelf. Also any good source for a correct liner other than scouring Ebay?

You will want one that has teh lighter khaki color OD #3 webbing that ties in the middle. should have a grommet hole for rank in front.

I have one in stock now but it was reissued int the 1950s

Thanks for the help. I'll try keep my eyes peeled on the various websites. With the various helmet liners all being advertised as "WWII", it's a bit confusing.

The helmet had a few major changes in WW2: front seam-fixed bail, front seam swivel bail, rear seam swivel bail. Post war they went from a rough cork finish and olive drab to a more even sand/silica finish with a darker OD green paint, then to a lighter green then to a smooth olive green from the 60s-80s when camo covers were used.

The liners changed from the early paper hawley liner, to the low pressures, to the pressed duck ones we are all familiar with, with the circle tie being used as an adjustment into the 1950s. The big difference is the wwii ones had the lighter shade of webbing, with the darker ones being used later.

Many helmets had many lives, and many front seams were refinished and repainted re-issued until the Kelvars PASGT helmets came out.
