I noticed several Hunting/Forestry topics scattered about. I would like to share information and photos with anyone interested in this subject. Here is a Private Forestry Dress Tunic for starters--picked it up at the 2008 SOS. The details are quite interesting as the green flecks in the shoulderboards are identical to the flecks in the shoulder cords.

PLGamehunter: Thankds for the input. Once again we see the variations. We are off to a good start. Here are three period pictures showing more variations. Note the lack of medals or other insignia.

I hope those of you who have viewed this discussion have enjoyed the uniforms and accessories contributed thus far. Forestry and Hunting, as well as shooting have been honored traditions in germany as well as most European nations. Here is a photo of my Imperial German Hunting Association Visor Cap.

Gents, What a treat, thanks to all who posted these photos of some seriously nice hunting and forestry-related pieces. Top notch! Much continued good luck to all of you. Bill Ps Chief, is the bronze signed? It looks great.

Rev. Stone, A sharp looking visor cap you have there, the piece looks impeccable, so well made as do the rest of the uniforms that are posted. Chiefs imperial set is an especially fantastic set - if it's from Braunschweig my eyes are seeing a little horse insignia on the cap..? Chief, could you post a couple more shots of the bronze falcon, please? Or, you could pop it into the falcon thread in the Imperial forum? Either way I'd really like to take a look at it... ... if you'd be so kind? Also ... the first original photo that you posted, is that a Heer portepee hanging from that dagger? Looks like it to these tired old eyes ..? Best! Bill

Chief Could you please post a close up picture of the hirschfnger in your first picture you posted on 17th March, looks to have a different style pommel and the knot looks interesting as well. All are great pictures, rare to find a picture of a hirschfnger in wear as clear as those.
Many Thanks

Thanks for your comments. Here are enlarged photos as requested. I agree the Cutlass is unusual in several respects. Unfortunately it becomes very grainy but here it is anyway.

Here is a rare Goring Hunting Association Award. I do not know why or how it may have been awarded. The silver plaque is silver marked and dated.

Chief,
Thanks for the additional photos. That's one nice bird-of-prey sir, you should be proud of having that in your wonderful collection.
Your Gring bust is new to me, I've never seen this pattern before but I like it very much. It has a great caricature-feeling about it and is really well sculpted. You actually don't see too many busts of the Reichsjgermeister for sale. This one has even captured that odd little thing with his lips, ha, very nice!
Wishing you much continued success with your fine collection!
Bill

Chief
Thank you so much for the additional pictures, a very unusual pommel that I think is likely a dogs head, certainly some kind of animal head, the suspension is also quite unusual, I can see a thin band of leather under the scabbard lug but not much else, it certainly is not the usual "V" notch frog commonly seen. I'm with Bill on this one, a wonderful bust of Gring and graet silver plaque, anything of Gring dedicated by the hunting association is very rare and very nice to see in such detail. Thanks once again for showing us your stuff.

Many thanks to Bill and Gary for their input and comments. I learn more about this hobby every day from fellow collectors. There is very little documentation on the DJ, Forestry and of course nothing on the DFO. Here is an interesting rather common DJ Award in Bronze, but it has the original case and was given as a shooting prize. Most of these are just dated at the bottom or have no engraving at all.

Hi chief82,
Your Gring bust has caught my attention. I am also not sure where and why this may have been awarded, but at least there is a clue with the year "1943". If it's not an award then perhaps it was meant as a gift. For my academic purposes could you please answer these questions. What is the total height and the height of just the pedestal? What are the dimensions of the silver plaque? Lastly, are there any markings on the bust itself?
Best regards

Carinhall: Thank you for your interest. The bust is aprox 8.5 inches overall, the pedestal measures about 4 inches, the plaque is about 2 X 2.25. The bronze itself appears to be signed "Zoll". I hope this is helpful to your research.

Chief Nice 1935 Bronze award, these awards run from late 1934 up to 1938, I personally have not seen any dated later than this although the Deutsche Jgerschaft still mention them in their publications up to 1942 so I suppose their might be some later ones out there, here's a few I have,I think I have a couple more to add to this pile, still a couple to find though.Your right about these awards, I have found the earlier ones are sometimes more than just a date the later pieces usually do just have the date.

This badge was issued like for game wardens to arrest pouchers ,etc. My badge at one time had a refective paint on the scroll, mostly gone now ; backside is hollow casting with long vertical pin . The best part was, that I found it like 15 years ago in a basket on a dealer's table at a gun show that was marked " Any item for $ 5 "! There are some variations of this badge ; it was discussed on the WHA FORUM .

Bernd,
You've really put together a great collection of DJ tunics and uniforms and it's always a pleasure to see such aesthetic items of this type of quality.
Chief - I'm fairly certain there was also a good thread that we had going on Houston's forum some time ago, regarding the Feld u. Forst Hter insignia. If you go through some of the older threads I'm sure you'll find it. I think it had some great photos of the variant badges.
Good hunting!

I'm mainly a tunic colector, and as yet have nothing by way of Forestry and/or Hunting, but do have a couple of relevant visors from my previous 'habit'. The most unusual is this Luftwaffe Forestry visor, with green band and piping. The maker is Michovious of Cottbus. I've never seen another one and I wonder if any of you guys have?

This is an interesting Tunic. It is Prussian Forestry. The buttons show the Prussian Eagle, but with a tiny Third Reich swaz in the center.

Falconry Hunting was also very popular and remains so. Information is scarce. This tunic is a 1930s high official DFO (German Falconry Org).

This is an interesting Forestry Administrator tunic as the buttons are gilt as is the collar tab and collar piping. The Hunting Arm Band bullion show much oxidation which gives it great character I believe.

Chief, Another visual feast for the eyes, many thanks! Some of these jackets are so well-designed and tailored, really top-shelf. You must have a whole closet full of these beauties, no? How long have you been at collecting forestry uniforms? It seems you've picked the best of the best. Once again, thanks and best regards! Bill

Thank you for the kind comments. I have been collecting Forestry/Hunting for about 25 years. . I have just tried to stay focused and select quality items. Although the fakers are now beginning to reproduce items in this field, the vast majority of uniforms are still originals. As you know Cutlass, Hirchfangers and medals are now being reproduced by the truckload. Here is a picture of a very productive hunt.

Some of you may find these interesting. The Reichjagermeister picture is a period DJ post card. The thin glass tea cup is from Goring's Yacht. Note the etched anchor centered HG monogramm.

Thanks WWII, and to Chief for some great stuff!
I wonder if the spoon you have is a Freikorps one? If you have Niemans book on awards look at pp. 58 and 80, where the Stags Head is very similar to the emblem for the Freikorps von Aulock and/or the Selbstschutz-Bataillon von Heyderbreck, respectively. If not let me know and I will scan (allowed?) for you.
I'm waiting on a couple of Forestry items that I recently got in an auction so I will post them when Santa brings them!

The Tunic with hidden buttons is very unique. I like it. Here are two Hunting Association medallions found at the Huntsville Show last week. The gold one is a solid non-portable and the bronze is hollow and was apparently attached or soldered to another unknown object. Both appear to have something to do with handguns. Ideas??

Hi Essex....nice photo.I don't know his rank but he is from the Deutsche Jaegerschaft organisation. Maybe if you look closely at his arm badge you will see the stag's head emblem similar to ones already posted. He is wearing his informal tunic (green buttons)and would have another with silver buttons for more formal occasions. Hi Mann...yes, the buttons are bakelite and have very fine lines etched unto them. Lastly, a Forestry Greatcoat.

Thanks for your reply regarding the buttons Tristan! I have a collection on m1943 type field caps. Something in common with a few, the striated texture of the bakelite buttons. This texture even carries over into a Swedish model I own from the same period. Gorgeous tunics! Cheers, Pauli
