All the black Allg.SS overseas ("side") caps I've seen are a slightly coarse but smooth wool; never seen any where the weave is apparent. Tunics are either "ribbed" or whipcord/tricot wool, or the smooth wool of the side cap. I'd be suspicious of any side cap of ribbed construction -- but then my experiednce is limited. Experts should weigh in here. Do you have pix?

The 1934 caps I have owned were rendered in the kind of black wool that one does find in Einheitstuch tunics, that is plain wool. The weight of the cloth might be somewhat lighter. I have not seen such black Schiffchen in trikot. I posed Darryl's side cap in another thread. It is entirely typical of the genre. The fakes are of a lighter weight of cloth, in fact.
