There is no greater sight in my opinion ( other than a minty army dagger ) than a bent rod and tight lines on a sunny day. Locally shore caught grey mullet ( chelon labrasus ) for the hardcore fisherman.
4lb trace and freshwater tackle, a 6lb fish and you know what fishing is all about Smile.
Oh yeh....and the spectators.

That's not a fish.

This is a fish...... Though we never pulled him out of the water, for his safety, this 'Goliath Grouper' was around 500lbs.

Glad to be back in the States for a few days.

No pictures at this time. I used to run the British Telecom West area deep sea fishing team, well I was the secretary and team captain responsible for team and competitions. Caught some good fish in my day. I was one of the first in the UK to practice a method called up tide casting. I had been fishing sine the age of ten. The fishing around the coasts of the UK is unlike any other in the world. The stocks started dropping and my interest died. I still have all my kit but have not managed to build the enthusiasm to get out on a boat wrecking.

Nice to see some good catches. My biggest was a 65LB conger eel caught off Brighton. Took me 45 minutes to land as we were in over 300 feet of water. I was using an Alvey reel with 50Lb test line, the trace was 150lb test wire. If anyone knows the reel it has no gears and is just a like a fly wheel only bigger. Unlike those souped up penn reels this one was bloody hard work you had to have your drag set and it was all rod work.

Now all I manage is a spot of fly fishing in a reservoir 10 minutes down the road.

Spock,
Good to see your well, you will have to find time out of your busy schedule to dig your gear out of the attic and come sample some sea air one day. We went mackerel bashing last sunday to build up the groundbait stocks for mulleting, you gotta love global warming.....the season is getting earlier and earlier every year, pretty soon we are going to be catching tuna!.

Yes, it sure feels like one pullin 'im in.

That was a few years ago. Now I am content to fish the salt ponds on the island for tarpon in the 2-3' range on light tackle.

Degens.

I don`t know if I have enough oil to lubricate all the reels. Smile

I fancy a nice Bass day with live sand eels a cheese sarney and a hot Oxtail soup. Then off to the pub and a few warm ales.

I may take you up on that offer mate.

I know its no where near as big as the 500 poung Warsaw grouper, but about two years ago i landed this beauty, weighed in at 57 lbs. and was 52.5 inches long, now you might not think much about that but the Texas state record is 59.5 pounds and 54.25 inches long, and thats a big redfish (red drum). For a split second I thought i had my name in the record books! Frown

That, John, is one damn nice Redfish. As a Floridian by birth, I spent many a day chasing reds.
Sadly, down here, we don't have any.

Thanks, Ju88 yeah the big bulls like that are always fun to catch, but the only problems are aside from the fact that legally you can only keep two per season, the meat from the really bigguns like this is way way too tough, like trying to eat rubber! And even though you can't chase the reds anymore, i'm sure there are lots and lots of other species down there to hunt, and I bet you come across quite a few nice ******** and Dorado down that way.

There are, John. I work a six day week (gotta keep the dream afloat!) so I don't have a lot of boat time, but I catch tarpon in the 15-30lb range on a daily basis. I use light 'bass' tackle, so it keeps it sporting.
Down here in St. Maarten, we have a few land locked lakes, which are slightly salty, hence the name 'salt ponds', and they are full of tarpon.

I am in the process of relocating to Curacao for the remainder of the year, and I will have to learn it all over again.
