Thanks guys, I was lucky enough to pick it up this morning at a small show. The carving is superb. It's one of the larger carved eagles I have seen, along the size of a railroad eagle.

Was there a story about where it came from by the seller?

No story I'm afraid, I'm not aware of where it came from. I'd certainly be interested in seeing other carved examples, there must be some out there somewhere. It's a little different than what I normally collect, there was a lot of interest in it, I had to wait until the guy in front of me put it down, I knew right away I was going to buy it.

Gary, That is one MEAN looking eagle and looking for it`s next meal. Each year I see a number of eagles where I live, but none that looks like this one. Good find and I LIKE IT. James

Outstanding! This is a very beautiful work of art with the highest level of craftsmanship in the carving.

I am a little curious about the swastika. It looks like it was not carved as part of the back ground, but applied on afterwards. Also, it does not seem to fit right. Notice the arms of the cross on the right and lower edge overlap the beautifully carved wreath. Does it look as if there was originally a removed carved swastika that might have been replaced at a later date?

The swastika is applied and looks fine really, even if it were removed and replaced after the war I do not see an issue with it. While these types of pieces make it difficult to determine date of manufacture this particular piece is a one looker in my opinion. I would not have put that down on a table. Nice catch.

Jerry, the swastika is a seperate piece, it looks as original as the rest, certainly I cannot see if a swastika was removed, there are no signs to say this was the case. The Eagle is actually made in four pieces, 2 wings, the body and the applied swastika.
