Just received this wrap for inspection. Would like to get some opinions from the experts on the originality (or lack thereof) of this wrap. The wrap does look pretty good in hand, but there are many fake pioneer wraps around. The skulls concern me a bit, as I know that this variant has been well faked. These could be original. All opinions welcome.
Thanks in advance, Doug

I would wonder why the silver on the piping isnt as age toned or close to the aging of the subdued siver braid on the boards. This may also just be the lighting in the photo.

Thanks for your e-mail John. The boards are definitely the subdued type, and are in pretty nice shape. The materials on the boards vs. the piping are different, so I'm not totally surprised that they may have aged a bit differently. Look forward to more input.

Doug, Really hard to say, even with the large number of detailed shots. I tend to think most of silver/black twist cord was hand applied to the skull tabs and collars, whereas this looks to have been done by machine. I have seen "factory-built" shoulder boards before, so it does not necessarily surprise me to see them here. How was the twist cord applied to the skull tabs (sewn on to the tab or applied separately around it)? If the cord is separate from the tab, is it possible to see anything underneath the tab? I am also a bit surprised to see that this is a later-war wrap. I would have expected an earlier wrap with standard cotton lining (not the apparent artificial silk). Although you want to look at and believe in the artifact first, what's the story behind the piece? And what's the price? Finally, I am always a bit leery of web sites that offer a whole "whack" of really rare items all at once, even if it is an initial offering. Color me skeptical, but these would be relatively easy to "hump" up and since there are no hard and fast rules to go by, the dealer can always claim ingnorance. In the interest of full disclosure: I do own a PzPi officer wrap, which I believe to be 100% good. That is the reason for some of my questions above. Regards, Bob Edwards

Hi
I collect Heer pioneer uniforms and it would be a dream to get one if real. I would like some provenance as the price would be very high. If you could bring it to the SOS I am sure you could get some opinions. The problem is that PzPioneer wrappers are so rare I doubt you will get opinions from people that had handle originals. If you do not get a lifetime no question asked warranty you better send it back. I would not buy it without some provenance provenance, but that's just my opinion. Regards Juan

I agree with Bob. I would be skeptical for a late war wrapper like this. Most units gave up their panzers and did not wear the wrapper any longer or switched to the feldgrau wrapper. I would also like to see more wear to the piping to match the wrapper wear. What is the history of this piece? Steve

The history of this piece according to the dealer is that it came out of an old collection of a collector who passed away. Thus, no real provenance. It is so hard to authenticate these, as they were made during the period using existing wraps. Thus, I'm not sure how one can ever truely determine originality without period photos of the exact wrap being worn. These are really tough. But, thanks for all of the input. Any opinions on the skulls?
Doug
