Tiep,

Are you referring to the maker mark looking off center?

Billy, heres my observations as I see and what I would research if I was buying that dagger. The moto is too far down the blade, the plain of the blade is narrow.Little detail in the eagles left foot area. The crossguards thickness and the throat is fat . The scabbard bands rings that attach the big rings are of sharp edges, I always thought they were rounded. Thats just how I see the dagger. I have a Horster and it is different than that dagger shown. My 2.5 cents, Tiep

Unless it is a very rare and unique variable, I would be very concerned with this dagger. Frown

A limited issue item, the Hitler Youth Leaders dagger has been a very attractive source of income for counterfeiters and dealers who sell them for over three decades. In Frederick J. Stephens first edition of Reproduction? Recognition! he lists 4 different versions of the dagger. That was in 1976! FP

I have BOTH copies of Mr. Stephens' books and they have saved me many $$ over the years. I hold him in high regard and hope that he can resurrect the third edition apparently abandoned by Mr. Gottlieb.

Hello DD,

Thank you for your kind comments about Reproduction? Recognition! The revised third edition will come to fruition, as I have accumulated a lot more material since the last edition.

I will be making a more public announcement about the book in the very near future. Thank you for your interest.

FJS, I've been waiting for your 3rd edition to come out. So it's good to hear work continues on it. Please let us all know when it becomes available.

I agree with just about everything that's been posted thus far. Square edge suspension ring attachments? Motto too far down the blade, Pommel detail. I would like to see a photo of the whole dagger and scabbard separately.
So far a bit better that most copies. A little too shiny for me though.

I'm just using my Horster for comparison Roll Eyes

I think that like myself a lot of folks would welcome a new edition of FJ Stephens book - and not a moment too soon. There are a ton of fakes out there. In the meantime the lesson here might be that an item to be purchased should be looked at before money has changed hands. Not afterwards when the seller has vanished into the night with your money in his pocket. FP

I took another look at this repro. Is it just the imagery, or is that paint filling in the etch to darken it? FP

Your best bet on not buying a fake dagger is to becoming totally familiar with what a real dagger is supposed to look like rather than what the reproduction looks like.
If they ever get the real dagger perfectly copied, then we are all doomed. IT HASN'T EVEN BEEN CLOSE TODATE, so study real daggers and HOPE the copy cats can't ever get it right.

My pleasure Rob, this site can be extemely helpfull at times. I myself am no expert , but I have a pretty good eye to detail as I looked through a loup for 25 yrs, but I also have the correct version of that dagger and thought I could help, Glad you had no loss of funds on it!!Nice hangers too!!! What did you want to hear,,, buy it , its a great deal. That kind of attitude you just expressed is one of the reasons this site is shrinking so drastically. Maybe you should just buy what you feel suits your eyes and just go on believing in your own purchase ,in your own little world. WinkRoll Eyes
