Hi, Got this in a couple of days ago. Early, all nickel fittings on dagger, chain & scabbard. Only the blade and scabbard shell are magnetic here. Interesting that the "SS" link closest to the wotans knot, and the wotans-knot assembly have been replaced, and the replacement parts are totally non-magnetic also! The patina is beautiful, and in my mind there is no doubt this repair was done pre-1945. The link-connectors in this area are also replaced, and the "new" ones are of a slightly thicker material than the original. Very interesting is the dedication on the back of the blade! Another dagger given by Pauly to someone (on his staff) in 1937. Cheers,
Tor-Helge

It looks like your dagger was given by Max Pauly SS# 5448,71 Standarte,DOB 1 6 1907 Pauly is not a common German name.

Beautiful daggers guys! I love those dedicated blades! I've only ever had one in my hands and that one slipped through my fingers and found it's way into John's collection . . . for the time being! One question . . . do we know if Max Pauly give many of these away or how many he bestowed on people? ~ Ian

Hei, Yes I have. But I dont know what to say, except that it's very finely done! Also, I dont believe these daggers from Pauly were ordered complete. I would think they are the original owners(recipients) daggers, collected by "someone" on 71.Standarte staff and sent off to have the additional dedication added. John: Is yours with plated fittings? Tor-Helge,
My Pauly dagger is in a 1st. pattern 36 scabbard and has all nickle-silver fittings.
I have often wondered if the heirarchy of the SS officers gave-presented the entire dagger or just had the blade engraved as a token of the event at hand. Considering all, I would lean toward your theory that just the blades were engraved as a gratis from the presenting officer.
Incidentally, the inscriptions are in an exact facsimilie of the presenter's own handwriting. Below is another presented dagger which was previously misidentified in an earlier dagger book which in fact is from 'Hans Adolph Prutznmann'
