This portepee came attached to a 2nd model Luft daggger I just got. Would this have been original to the dagger?

Jim,
This is the proper Portepee for either Luftwaffe dagger. The long Portepee went on the Heer dagger. Tie it around the ferrule in either a straight or X configuration and it will be correct.

It should be mentioned that in a few instances the long knot was also worn on the Luft dagger. There are period "wearing " photos to prove it. So--if you get one out of the woodwork like that --you might not want to remove it.
