Hi All,

Curious about this area of the police collecting realm and haven't seen / heard much except for the occasional posting of displays.

Looking to see examples of edged weapons used by the police. I'm looking to add a piece to my collection and would like to educate myself as much as possible.

Anyone care to post some, or point me in the right direction.

Thanks,
Andrew

Andrew,

Look in the Swords forum and you will find a long thread on German Police Swords. The Bayonet forum will give you a lot of info about the various bayonets. The only real daggers worn by the "police" were the Feuerwehr dagger and the Wasserschutzpolizei dagger.

Let me know what specific edged weapon you are looking for and perhaps we can help.

Hi George

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I wouldn't have found it. I was going over the dagger forums.

OK, basically why I was looking for information was that I recently acquired a police portepee and was looking for instances where this was used. I need to take some pictures of the one I have, but basically it is the silver knot (?) officer version.

I checked it against a black light and it is UV dead, although small aspects of the silver knot do light up. Not sure if that is something to be concerned with. I will post some pics of it this week when I can take some natural light closeups.

Would this have been worn with the police K98 Eagle Head Bayonet ? I just need to know what direction to go in. Not sure if a sword is on my financial horizon. A Bayo might be more practical for me.

Andrew,

The Pol Portepee came in two sizes. The large one was generally worn on swords while the smaller one was worn on bayonets. The one with green stripes is for NCOs and the one with an all aluminum Quaste was worn by Officers.

Here is a pix of the Officer style Portepee.

That is the one I was referring to. Thanks for helping me with the terminology. What I called the "knot" is actually the solid silver aluminum Quaste.

This one appears to be unissued as the strapping is tied together with very fine string. A guesstimate on the overall length is about 16"

Andrew,

As George indicated, the swords and bayonet forums are a great place for information. You know who has an excellent reference book on the subject (Seitengewehr: History of the German Bayonet 1919-1945)!!

Just thinking about it, I dont have any really good pictures of my remaining four rural bayos other than of the hilts that I would have to resize. For some reason Ive not been able to find that one Schupo & School bayo that I like so its been difficult to hang onto them.

Only have one sword

Andrew,
good luck in your quest to find polizei edged weapons.

Dave,
I did not know you had such a stunning example of the SS-Polizei Degen! Rarely does much if any silver frosting on the eagle remain on most examples, yet yours appears to retain all of the silver. Sweet with the SS portepee too. Does it by chance have the SS runic emblem on the pommel? Is the manufacturer Pet. Dan. Krebs?

Dave, I had not realized you live in Colorado. I am in the Philly area for work, but home base is just south of Denver. Perhaps after I get back this fall we can get together and show off some of our collection? I have only a hand-full of bayonets and a couple of police bayonets, but a few lugers. Smile
