The twisted cord is seen on upgraded caps when an NCO with enlisted issue headgear was promoted. However, the sweat band is odd for an enlisted cap.

I don't like the look of the twisted cord. Officer's cap piping is significantly different. I have a cap which was upgraded from an issue OR's, by the addition of twisted cord, but the workmanship was much better, and the cord was not as thick as this.

The addition of a leather sweatshield, whilst not issue, is not unknown. The sweatshield design is like that of a Bergmutze. If period, was probably done by a private tailor.

The combination of the two issues brings an obvious question. If such a shield was well tailored, why a poor quality piping addition?

I suspect the answer lies somewhere post WW2, when someone decided to upgrade the cap, to make it more valuable.

Hope this helps.

David!
