Gentlemen,

Excuse my ignorance but I have a question. Like most boys back in the 1950s I made model planes, ships, etc. Like most kids with little sense, I no longer have those models having destroyed them in final battles with the onset of moving toward what seemed more manly pursuits, such as an interest in girls.

What I did keep were my 1950s period Dinky toys and SAE figures. As a matter of fact, I have added to those over the years to complete the pre-1959 military models that I did not have. My question is, are current modelers interested in the old stuff?

Here is an example of what I am talking about. This is a Dinky 161b Anti Aircraft Gun with the attendant personnel. These were made pre-war from 1939-1940 and postwar from 1946-1948.

Of course if you never throw anything away, it becomes a collectible if you simply live long enough. I have quite a few Dinky, SAE, Elastolin, etc toys and figures if there is any interest in seeing them.

Most Dinky toys are 1/43 scale and non-military vehicles were made to scale with railroad train sets. The figures shown with the AA gun above are Dinky figures. They were made to go with the Dinky vehicles and are typically seated figures or figures such as the ones above that constitute a gun crew.

A view of a set of Dinky boxed figures made to man vehicles.

SAE, on the other hand, made figures to go along with Dinky vehicles but in a wide variety of military poses. SAE (Swedish African Engineers) figures are contemporary figures made in South Africa, where Dinky figures were made in England.

Here is a boxed example of US Soldiers in a box that is dated 1955. This set is number 6ch - U.S. Infantry Charging.

Dave,

Thanks for the encouragement. I have a few hundred of these Dinky and SAE guys, along with a few other Elastolin, etc soldiers.

The more common charging soldier. These are all SAE figures and are factory painted.

Paulbear,

I did the same thing some time ago. I still had all my Dinky military toys but still lacked a few. I found most of the ones I did not have on ebay but paid much more for them than in 1955.

Here is an example of one that I bought in the 1950s. This is #162 a, b, & c. Light Dragon Tractor, Trailer, & 18 Pounder Gun. The gun crew are Dinky men.

I, too, had Dinkys in the late 1950s and saved them. I have tried to ad to them and still haven't found the early searchlight truck and the larger early tank.
These were great, but expensive in those days and haven't gotten any cheaper.

PS: I also have many of the Plaster Paris type large US soldiers from the period.

the searchlight is very rare and suffered from lead fatigue which made its survival rate amongst the lowest. The larger chain track tank is around but always lacking the antenae.

I have some of the boxes, but not for the early pieces. Do you Paul?
Also, I could never find any of the German figures from Dinky. I know they made them, but never found any and my store in Quincy never had any of the Germans.
I do have some of the small British men in the original Dinky boxes.

Ron,

The Germans were hard to find. Here is a poor photo of two variations of the Geman Infantryman with machine pistol. The heel of the boot is off the ground on one variation and on the ground in the other. I bought these in the 1950s after a long search. I may have even had the store order them as I recall.

A better shot of the markings on the bottom of these SAE figures. This is the German machinegunner.

This is the larger Dinky 151a Medium Tank. The antenna is missing just as Paul describes. Play value was high, but the antenna did not last long.

Here is the Dinky 152a Light Tank for comparison. I did not break the antenna off of this one.

Lastly, here is the Dinky 161a Lorry Mounted Searchlight. Metal fatigue got this one and the searchlight is mostly a modern replacement. A good representative piece though.

These pesky things have gotten downright expensive! Eek

But, you have got to admit they are neat! Big Grin

After all, a pretty cheap way to recapture our youth... don't you think? Cool

I don't have the boxes for the early pieces, they have been available out of Britain but not at the prices.I have all the late 50s early 60s boxed and mint state now and many extras a few mint.Nice searchlight in any condition like I said hard to find without repairs.I have never seen the German dinky soldiers for sale they are neat. Will have to check Manions a bit harder.
