Here's a Japanese flag currently on ebay. At the top of the flag, a rectangular space has been left clear of any kanji. A similar thing has been done on the flag in this link, but the area appears to have been cut and stitched, and it's on the left edge. http://www.germanmilitaria.com/Japanese/photos/J014358.htmlDoes anyone know why and for what purpose this has been done? Regards Russell

On the flag from the Collectors Guild my guess is it was modified as a cape? The cut out intended for the neck? On the flag posted perhaps a name of a signer was deleted for who knows why? No longer a friend, dead or previous owner didn't want his name known.

Thanks Jareth. My thoughts for the Guild flag were the same as yours. But when I saw the other one, I wondered if there was another significance as to why this was done. So far, I haven't seen any others like these.
