I just picked up what is basically an unissued 1st Luft by Helbig. The keather is flawless! Not a scratch or scuff. The wire around the handle appears perfect. I am an SA dagger guy. Can anyone give me info on this? Should the chain be on the left or right of the dagger? Does the dagger go into the scabbard with the maker mark in the front or the back? Is the maker mark side of the blade the front or back?

Thanks Guys

Nice dagger can not remember ever seeing an aluminum Helbig-chain would be on the right side looking at the dagger from the front. Most accepted way the maker mark is on the back of the blade. Some exceptions to this would be army & 2nd model lufts as well as navy daggers had the maker mark facing the front in some cases.

Thanks Tom. So its just like an SA. Hanger on right mark on back. I was looking some SA's when the guy pulled this out. It was so nice I couldnt pass it up. It really looks new. ANy idea of value in this condition? I have seen a few on Craigs site for $1895 and less. His are nice but this is perfect.

With a little looking you could land a nice aluminum 1st model for around the 1K mark plus or minus.

Is Helbig a rare or common maker?

Fairly common on the early nickel silver but as I said I dont remember ever seeing an aluminum model by this maker.
