Just picked this one up yesterday. It's a short sword. The tang is not signed. Is there anyway to tell how old a sword like this is. The fittings are iron with inlays.

Randal, It looks like a fine (possibly) Edo mumei wakizashi to me. My advice is to show it (with closer photos) to guys from Nihonto Message Board. They will tell you everything about your waki.

AGE AND POSSIBLY AREA OF MANUFACTURE CAN ONLY BE DETERMINED BY A GOOD HANDS ON EXAMINATION STUDYING THE TYPE OF STEEL USED, THE METHOD OF FORGING AND TEMPERING. I AGREE THAT FROM THE PICTURES IT A APPEARS TO BE AN EDO ERA SWORD.
