Guys, please tell me if you see any red flags and please give me a ball park figure to it's value in this condition.
Thanks in advance, Scott

SDP,
Are the numbers matching?
If yes and if the blade is completely bright with no corrosion, it would be worth about 475 to 575 US$ to me.
Best greetings,
Herman

No red flags. A municipal police cutdown bayo that has seen wear. The blade could be a bit better. There should be a matching unit number on the scabbard. If there is, my guess is it's worth $400-$450. If there is no number or it doesn't match then the value would be less. However, I have not been keeping up on the prices of these so I may be off. I sold all of mine in the past two years.

As you can see, Herman confirms that I am out of step with the prices of these bayonets.

It doesn't have matching numbers unfortunately.
The blade is pretty good, it's just not that good near the tip as shown above.

hi scott its a nice one shame about non matching but that doesn't detract any thing from it in my opinion. alot of them go like that near the blade tip. they sell for around £250-£350 here

Hi Seany... really, that much? That's approximately $470.00 to $660.00. Would that be Dealer prices on their website's? Cheers, Scott

SDP, Does the number on the scabbard also starts with S.B. ? If that is the case, then the scabbard could be switched during the period. Personaly I can live with non matching numbers as long as initials (S.B. in this case) do match. The value is lower: 375-425 US$ in my opinion. Skyline, Those frogs are expensive in Europe: up to 100 US$, that might explain part of the difference between our estimates... Greetings, Herman

Herman, there isn't a number on the scabbard, only on the crossguard and it does indeed, start with S.B. Cheers, Scott

I don't have a ruler or tape measure but it's the shorter version as Skyline spotted.

A standard cut down variety blade is usually 13", I'm thinking your piece is within a quarter inch of that.
I've never seen a grip eagle set in like that. The ones I've seen are either set on top of the stag & flush with it. On some later war examples I've seen the stag gouged out roughly with the eagle set in the gouge. This one seems to be done early and cut out nicely. No red flags though. nice piece.

Am I missing something? If a cut down blade is 13", how long is an uncut blade?
Thanks.....tj

TJ,
A standard "long" blade police bayonet has a 17" blade, the cut down variety will show a 13" blade. Some bayonets will be found with the long blade intact but missing the clamshell while some may retain theclamshell and have the 13" blade. If that wasn't confusing enough, you will also find different length blades on the many private purchase bayonets out there. The 17" & 13" blade lengths refer to Preußen Weimar bayonets that were for the most part issued pieces.

Thanks for clarifying that, Billy. I was under the impression that the 13" blade was full length, and a cut down police bayo was similiar to a typical dress bayonet in length.
I guess that would explain why I have never seen one!
Thanks again,

Ju88,
The following pics shows a Weimar clamshell in original length and a 3rd Reich police cutdown.
Note the handle on the 3rd Reich police was also shortened.

Bad pics, I know ! This pic shows why the 13" blade has a full length fuller running to the tip.

Thanks. aurelia, for taking the time to show me this. There is no mistaking the tip in respect to the fuller.
I have a cut down that I always referred to as a full length.

Keith, Thank you for mentioning that the grips on cut down bayonets were also shortened. Have you found examples who's holes were filled with beeswax? And I wanted to mention, some very nice pieces you've been hiding there in Hong Kong

Just a question: Does anyone of you own or having seen such a police bayonet with countersunk police emblem like sdp is showing here??? All mine do have it attached on the outside, how high these stag grip "mountains" and how deep the "valleys" might be. But I might learn. Also the background behind the badge looks really new and without any 60 year tarnishing. Just my thoughts and the pics are not the best for such a minute thing. Sorry for my expression, I am sure you know what I mean. Billy G., at all of mine the holes are filled with any kind of material (I always have thought of a material called "liquid wood")

Wotan, I've heard the Germans used all sorts of stuff to fill the holes and I wouldn't be surprised if they used some liquid wood as well. Some are cut really well so that you can't even see the remains of the original rivet holes however more often than not you see the ones with remaining holes by the crossguard. My personal preferece is I don't like to have pieces with that, but there's so many reasons to buy one of these bayonets that it's never solely a deal breaker for me. Here's a picture I saved from Eban of an Ewald Cleff with a similar type of gouging in the stag to accommodate the grip eagle. This one is not as deep as the other one posted here. When I initially saw the Cleff, I stayed away since it looked to me to be a post war botch job however since that time I've seen a number of them and think it's more an indication of late war lack of quality control than post war fiddling. That said, I'm not sure what to make of the deep sinking of the posted eagle and apparent lack of wear & tarnish. Nothing surprises me anymore.
