I do not think the early SS has anything going for it.

Compare to this. I fished this image out of an old file from here. The 2d badge looks very odd to me, indeed.

In my opinion both are OK.

The larger one is one of the many variants of hussar skull. The funny eyes are distinctive.

I have seen that type being worn on the collar by Kronprinz Wilhelm in the 1920s. He was another 'skull freak' all his adult life.

Thanks for the opinions guys,Robin what you say makes sense.I would be very surprised if that skull was a fake because I took it off the flap of a very early browning 1922 holster.The early 1922 pistol was rusted and pitted badly so I just bought the holster(for the skull) took the skull off and sold the holster .That was years ago, wish I would have bought the whole rig now,maybe it was Wilhelms!

I have great faith in Robin Lumsden's view. The 2nd one is truly an odd version, though. Nonetheless, never say never, but I do offer: viel Sammlerglueck.

Colleague Lumsden is better on this than I, but, in a word, yes. The pattern of 1925 or so was but a Hussard pattern and there were many variants of the so-called Danziger Totenkopf.

I have been searching my files for examples of what appear to be that odd pattern of TK being worn. Here it is on the Leibhusar uniform, c. 1900......

....and here is the Kronprinz......still wearing his favourite, but totally unofficial, collar skulls in the mid-1930s.

Finally, here's an example of that odd type in my own collection.....the one in the middle. This one is silvered brass.

Thanks for the period example pics of variants of this skull Robin.The one on Wilhelm looks like a match ,mine is silver coated brass too.I have your SS Regalia book, great pics and info,super book.
