Igot this shooting medal awards chain from my Mother's cousin years ago . It is from the small middle German town of Stolberg/Harz .My Grandfather belonged to the same hunting club , but his chain got lost. The club members wore green hunting uniforms and a leather shako with a black horsehair bushel . They wore huntig daggers , their WWI decorations and just below these this shooting medal awards chain . The was a big social thing in this small town of 2,500 and the club had a parade ones a year , dances and a shooting contest at an wood carved eagle --this one is shown on one of the medals --to crown the winner as the next shootig king .The Duke of Stolberg -Stolberg was a sponcer of the club , since the actual deer hunting in the Fall would take place in his forests. Enjoy , Bernd Ostermann.

The medal that shows the wood carved and painted eagle . I remember it being nailed to the wall of Grandfather's horsebarn . NOW it is in the local Museum. It is rather large like 6 feet tall and everything on it is paited in bright colors.

The backside states that this medal was given by the "Buergerschuetzen-Kompagnie -Hettstedt" for the "5.Mansfelder-Bundesschiessen-Hettstedt-1927". And the medal has a 990 silver mark . Hope you enjoyed all this . Regards, Bernd Ostermann

Bernd,

Very nice medals!

I especially like "Dem Besten Schützen auf den Hirsch." What's neat is that the medals reflect the history of the club, the town and also the individuals achievements.

I have a question for you ... when the big Königsketten get too big or full of awards,
do the clubs retire those chains and start a new one? Why are these big, heavy chains so seldom seen in the collectors market? Your thoughts appreciated.

Do you collect other shooting awards besides these that belonged to your family?

Thanks and best regards!

Bill Warda

I have not been to any of the present day shooting festivals in my Grandparent's home town, but my son has -and per his special effort to be there at the festivals time, they still have the parade through town, shoot their rifels with blanks in the market square , have dinner , dances and shooting at targets to find a new shooting king . I have seen during my last visit there , 4 years ago, a wood painted ,12" round ,target plate nailed to the wall of a house that showed the owner as the last shooting king . However , these before the war shooting awards chains are not known anymore ,per my cousin . So, may be only families have them still and are holding on to them as a family history piece. I have never seen one of these on the market for sale. Regards , Bernd.

Bill , I don't have any other shooting pins or medals. --But I do have a DDR Forestmaster's tunic and visor cap that I got through the help from one of my cousins in the former East- Berlin . I posted this tunic and visor cap under the Police Uniform Forum in the DDR&WEST GERMAN POLICE UNIFORM section , on page 2 , dated 6.Aug.2004. If you like to look at those items. Regards , Bernd .
