Richard Kuchta has asked me to post for him images of this SS dress bayonet for inspection and comment. I�m not a specialist in this area: But among other things did not particularly care for the quality of the etching. So in addition to cleaning up very slightly the images that he sent me - I�ve taken the liberty of enlarging a portion of one of them for a better look by those who do specialize in dress bayonets. Are the rivets still ok or does it look the Bayonet was once apart?
Interesting thing with these SS Bayonets.

The rivets look untouched.The heads are very smooth and show no signs of having been repeened.

There was one SS Bay. at the SOS offered from Weitze. Grenadier Military got it then and it looks it sold for around 4k. You still can check out how it looked, also with runes in a circle and I think double etched and from Eickhorn.

The bayonet that you refer to had the runes located closer to the crossguard side of the blade. I have been told that it looks quite good but no one has yet said that it is an authentic piece.

The bayonet that is shown here has been in a private collection for a very long time. However, I need some help in determining if this is a legitimate etched SS bayonet. All help will be appreciated.

Help is on the way. If I were asked to buy this piece I would PASS on it. Here are my reasons. First, look at the template etch being centered on the blade. This etch has way too much space at the top. Original template would have filled in this space. Look in my E & F Horster section of my book, notice how little space there is between the edge of the blade and the start of the template outline, then the frosted area. Second, look at the CRUDENESS of the lettering, acorns and leaf vains within the etch. Compare the lettering again with the Horster (Holler) examples. The lettering on good examples will ALWAYS look good with a frosted backround behind it. Third, look at the jagged edges near the top of the oakleaves and the crude irregular bookend adornments at the border of your example. This kind of irregular etching is not seen on pre-45 examples, let alone one for the SS!! Strike three for me, back it goes....

Yes, there was a BEAUTIFUL Eickhorn SS example at the SOS. I was fortunate enough to have examined it CAREFULLY (every detail). I can tell you that not one flaw was seen in that etch or in the circle(going horizontal as it should)of the SS. This is only the second honest SS etch I have ever seen. The other is in my book.

Could you give a description of the SS bayonet that you observed at the SOS. Was it a single or double etch? Was there a cannon motif on it?

I will describe it as I remember it. Bayonet was the long, single etch type with the typical 3221 Cannon(Artillery) Eickhorn motif. The only difference was a circled SS running horizontal within the etch at the ricasso end. All the frosting was there. Absolutely beautiful piece. I wish I had had a camera to take a picture of the etch, flawless beauty. Perhaps the new owner might display the piece at the next SOS. Or better yet, give me a chance to buy it..
