Postal Inspectors frown on interstate fraud. If I recall correctly it is a felony. Contact the U.S. Postal Service and present your case. I trust you have records for them to review....? Mark

I agree with JR here. Post his name and where he is located. Several of us were ripped off by a Canadian scam artist and it took quite a bit of joint effort on our part working with the Canadian authorities; but he has been arrested and is due up for trial soon. This scam involved a least 3 members of this forum including myself and also included two other prominent members of the collecting community who don't post here but at least have been informed as to what's going on. One of the big advantages we had is we were able to identify what was happening early on through the interaction of us on this Forum. There may be others who are in the same boat. Jim

Hi DD,
I had a similar problem a few years ago, only my trouble stemmed around a $150 bayonet. Believe me, I was steaming mad despite the relatively cheap cost. I Googled the locale where the tool lived and got ahold of the local police department. After two phone calls, I was put in touch with the officer in charge of internet crimes (small department, go figure). After giving him the info, he made a phone call to the subject holding my new toy and I had it in my hands in 48 hours. I'm not saying each case will be as easy but sometimes a tip to the local gendarmerie will touch a nerve, particularly if the tool has had run ins previously. Best of luck in your endeavor.

I hope we at GDC can help DD Harris with this problem. DD is a great guy, and I have bought a few items from him. He is one of the fairest and nicest guys out there. DD - I found this result from http://www.swtichboard.com for Luther Clark in the Texas town you mentioned. Switchboard dot com places only public domain information through its search engine, so there is nothing illegal in posting this information. DD, also please note that the city is spelled "Copperas Cove TX," not "Copparas." http://www.switchboard.com/bin/cginbr.dll?ID=77380101&ABS=0&FUNC=MORE&TYPE=1008&F=Luther&MEM=1&L=Clark&T=Copperas+Cove&S=TX&QV=98F3E2F9BA914703BB920C78A6D280A0l029FD53C2ECDBB43AC303203O019FD23C2ECDBB43AE303203O03882A3D4ACCBB4381303203Three Luther Clark's show up in Copperas Texas. If I used the spelling you used, there is one more result that comes up for a Luther Clark who is 23 years old. http://www.reunion.com/dispatch?action=student&affiliateid=11&id=135576910I am not a paying member of that site, but for a few bucks you can join and get another e-mail address and possibly more info on him. Also, note that for a fee, you can do background checks on these individuals and obtain public domain info on Criminal Reports, Lawsuits, Judgments, Liens, Bankruptcies, Property Ownership, 30 Year Address History, etc. Are there any law enforcement types or lawyers here on GDC who could chime in and help DD out?

Email him these 2 pictures and ask him if he recognises his house, the closer to home you get the more chance you have of getting a result. .

D.D.H., sorry about the postal service not being able to help. I thought for certain that fraud tru the mails was very serious. Did they say why they could not help?
I hope you get the weasel. Looks like Borse is on the right track. Things can get hot for that crook guy now. The wonders of the internet never cease to amaze me.
Good Luck..

D.D.H. Does this guy have a listed tel no.? If he has one sometimes a call can rattle them enough for them to do he right thing. If the number isn't listed under his name try doing a reverse telephone check and searching under the address. Good luck. Update: I went ahead and did some searching and if there is a tel. no. for the above address it's unlisted. There are 3 Luther Clarks in Copperas Cove all with unlisted numbers ranging in age from 21 to 44. Another thing you can do is send him a registered letter with receipt required. This will verify that he is at that address when you get the receipt back since he'll have to sign for the letter*. BTW: You might want to email him the above picture and ask if he has a basic understanding of "missle on a wire" technology! Jim

Jim, The address given by DD is 1103 South 7th Street in Copperas Cove, TX. Switchboard Dot Com says Luther Clark's address is 1104 South 7th Street in Copperas Cove, and his phone number is (254) 518-3135. Here is actually a better image of his house on the corner lot. Copperas Cove is about midway between Austin and Waco.

Borse: I understand that; but we're dealing with apparentely 3 different Luther Clarks here. It could get messy if you arrive at the wrong place! I still think the registered letter route is the best initial approach. However; D.D. ought to at least call that number. Jim

Jim,
Absolutely. That is why I suggested paying the small fee to join that site and get a background check on the names.
Moreover, the reason I posted that one Luther Clark's number was because it was almost an exact "hit" of what Mr. Harris posted. Same name, same street same town, but only off by one number. The chances of another Luther Clark being one house next door are pretty slim, but best to err on the side of caution, yes?
Your letter idea is a good one.
DD--best of luck in this. Contact the police and let the person know via the same way you communicated to him before he stiffed you. I am sure he won't welcome the news that the police have been called, but you reap what you sow. Maybe it will be enough to persuade him that you are serious about bringing charges against him.
Please let us all know how it turns out.

Copperas Cove is a bedroom community right next to Ft. Hood Texas (The largest military base in the continental US) and many of the residents are in the military. If this weasel is in the military all youve got to do is contact his commanding officer and the problem will be solved PRONTO!

DD, Texasuberalles has a good point. You can call Ft. Hood at 287-1110 (The area code is 254). Ask for the base locator, and see if you can find Luther Clark, or better yet, what unit he is in. Here is a list of useful phone numbers: http://www.hood.army.mil/fthood/Info/useful_numbers.htm

Hi DD! Sorry to hear about this, I will be going to Houston TX in the next several weeks. If you would like me to file papers for you I would be happy to! How exactly did he do this to you? I think we Internet dealers have this fear always in the back of our minds. So far, I have been incredibly lucky to have wonderful and easy to deal with customers. But I know there are some nasty people out there. Best Wishes, Bob

DD, I think we will breath the collective sigh of relief with you when the check is actually found in the envelope from Texas. But, it looks like Luther the Elder stepped in when he realized Junior was going to have to speak with Texas Law Enforcement. Ticking off Texas cops is akin to poking a bear with a sharp stick: "Look - he's gettin' mad! Now he is showin' his teeth!"I looked at the picture of the pile of junk you posted. I don't know what my reaction would have been when I opened that box. Probably anger, hurt, and sadness all at once. Here is hoping it all turns out well, and it appears your RR car is back on the tracks and heading in the right direction now. I nominate you for the GDC Wound Badge in any case. It will take Vern or Dave to make the final decision I believe. Those in favor?

Good for you guys, banding together to help a fellow member who was the victim of a scam! I got scammed once a few years ago in a similar way (non militaria though) for about $600. Showing the person that you know exactly where they are, really helps put that fear into them and get them thinking. Reading this post brings back a lot of memories! These guys usually end up being just some punk kids that still live with the parents. That helps too when you can use the parents to your advantage. I ended up getting most of my money back using similar methods as I read in this post. I second that wound badge recommendation for Harris!!

DD,
I'm glad the local cops were able to be of service. In my own experience I figured they wouldn't give a whit when they found out it was 3R stuff but nothing could be further from the truth. I'm happy the cop's phone call at least got the guy to contact you. At least he now knows you're not someone that will take being punked lightly. Keep us apprised of the outcome and best of luck!

I would also like to know how this worked out for DD & hope that he got a right result. I know exactly how he must feel. I`ve just taken a look at that "repo junk" It is interesting to note that the second luft there is the same as one that I have. I got caught with it when I first started collecting, (it was only my 3rd piece) & almost enough for me to leave this hobby....that is how bad it makes you feel.
I`m glad now that I didn`t! At the time nobody here would call it junk because of forum diplomacy. Not a huge amount of money (about $350) but even now almost 3 yrs later it still hurts me to look at it.
Best wishes DD

Kursk is right, if its a member of this forum who is also a dealer named Paul, you dont have anything to worry about he is one of the best.
Never argue with an idiot, he will only drag you down to his level and beat you with experience. And remember the early bird gets the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.
