Just got this unit marked bayonet. Anymore info on the 89th Regiment and what the WH 14 and 1491 that has been marked on the hilt would be appreciated. I met Jeff Noll( author of The Imperial German Regimental Marking) today at the Ventura CA gunshow. He seems like a nice guy and is a devoted collector. He gave me a lot more info on my Naval unit marked sawback bayonet.Which I had with me. Thanks

Mecklenburgisches Grenadier Regt No. 89 was part of the IX AK during the time this bayonet was issued, its wartime record I could look up but its a hassle sorting through the Divisions finding one Regt. Speaking of Jeff Noll his book has a Regimenter to cross reference... What is the exact unit marking, can't tell much from those images. Carters book on the Sg98 has a 1903 Erfurt to this Regt (89.R.6.90.) but its the only one I have records of from this Regt, I do have several examples on file for its sister Regt (the 90th) Yours appear to be 1904 dated/acceptance?
Post the exact unit marking & I will see what I can find on its wartime service.

From 1914-1918 it was part of the 17th Inf Div (9th AK), it spent the war on the Western Front and in both 1917 & 1918 assessments (by the Allies) was considered a very good Division. The 17th Inf Division was considered by the US Army intelligence estimates as one of the German Armies best Divisions by the end of the war.

Thanks for the reply graf, The markings read 89.9.35 It apppears that a number or two are worn off just before the 9. The acceptance mark is W04. Interesting that their are no 89 Regimental markings on anything (bayonets,pistols,rifles,ect..) listed in Jeff Noll's book.
