I have a knot (portapee) that came on an Eickhorn army with a 9" cord from the end to the slider. It is much too short to wrap in the proper army manner. What type of knot would it be? How long is the cord on a normal army knot?

Thanks, Lance

From time to time you can see the longer, 42cm incorrectly on second lufts (can be seen also in period wearing pics) and I personally got an army directly from the family of the late wearer which had a short 22 cm one in a, therefore necessary, very special wrap.
Although against regulations sometimes daggers/portepees were worn this way during the period. So, if not switched postwar, it is possible the combination you have is period.

It should also be mentioned that other lengths-longer and even shorter can very often be found. Some of the shorter ones may have been shortened post war but perhaps not. IMO -ANY length could be ordered even though not regulation--and also IMO this was quite common.
If you have a large amount of knots--Army and Luft types--and various hangers also--if you line them all up you usually will see many differences both in construction and length-some minor -some major.
In this hobby, contrary to popular belief, there were and are MANY period exceptions to both regulations and the "textbook" examples.
