Hello, this was recently aquired with a now identified P.SS. bayonet. It is pictured in the Bayonet forum. Is this the proper type portepee one would expect to find on a PSS bayonet or is it of a different type? Best, Bill Bourque

Bill,

I would say it looks like a tarnished Feuerwehr portepee. I've got about 20 of these knots that are similarly tarnished. Gingerly check under the mesh to see if the metal stem underneath is gold or just tarnished silver as it could be a Justiz NCO knot. Another way would be to look underneath the leather slide just above the stem to see if the metal threads are silver or gold, silver would be Feuwewehr and gold would be Justiz. Ether way, a nice knot.
