Basic tips are find one without a lip to the scabbard, a grip emblem that has some movement to suggest it is pinned to the grip, no seam mark under the quillion ( hooked bit ), a trademark or RZM ( or both ) that matches others listed on this site ( use the find ^ ).
It really depends how much you are willing to spend as to quality, from a collectors point of view always get the best you can afford you wont regret it in the long run. Have a look at this site, d.d.h is a member of this forum and has a good selection of hj's, if he does not have one you fancy his pictures are a good reference on what to look for Smile. http://www.ddsdaggers.com/

Hi Peter - welcome to the forum. I agree with what Degens has told you. You should also take a good look at the threads in this part of the forum and look at the pics and read all the comments - you can learn a lot by doing this.

I would also suggest that you visit http://www.lakesidetrader.com/index.html

Paul is a well known member of this community also, and has written a basic guide to buying HJ's which is on his website above. I believe that you will find this useful when just starting out. He also has some nice HJ's for sale which are definately worth looking at covering various prices and knife condition.

If you have questions, members will answer where possible, and if you see anything you like that you're not sure about, post some pics for everyone to see.

Regards
Russell
