I have this plain leather sword hanger. I've seen others similar that have a regain hook on the metal stud at the belt end. It appears this one never had a hook as there's no evidence of it being broken off. Can anyone tell me which Japanese sword this would be appropriate for? Also presume there is an attachment missing from the belt end, or was the leather strap folded over and buttoned onto the hanger on the belt?

Regards
Russell

Russell,

Yes this is a rather standard Japanese sword hanger with the so-called snail hook on the end. Some of these leather straps did not have a regain hook as the hook was attached to either the metal ring or slide on the belt that this strap attached to. It would be appropriate for about any Japanese military sword with a single ring suspension on the scabbard.

Orpo, many thanks for the information. I'll try and find a metal attachment with a hook in order to complete the hanger. You can see in the pic that it has had some form of metal attachment where the leather has been folded over and buttoned.

Nice hanger Russell! A little carressing with bronze or copper wool on the metal parts with a light touch of high quality gun oil would bring the blueing back nicely, and help stop that darn rust.Just dont get the oil all over the leather!Congrats on your find!Geoff Big Grin

Hi Geoff, many thanks. I wiped the surface rust off and it looks much better. I'll leave the leather alone - it's a little stiff but in very good condition. I just need to find an attachment for the top end of the hanger.

Russell
